Amritsar is an ancient city and one of the most sacred pilgrim centers of the Sikhs. Situated in the Langar district of the state of Punjab, this walled city houses many religious gurudwaras and historical memorials depicting the sacrifices made by the Sikh Gurus.

Chandigarh aptly called 'The City Beautiful' is situated at the foothills of the Shivalik Range. The administrative capital of Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, and deriving its name from 'Goddess Chandi', Chandigarh is spread over 114 sq km, is the first and most well-planned urban city of India and is well known world over for its architectural brilliance. The city of Chandigarh boasts of a number of structures, prominent among them being the Capitol Complex (the seat of the government) that comprises of the secretariat, the high court and the legislative assembly, which are some of Le Corbusiers greatest architectural creations.

Another place worth visiting is the Rock Garden which has a collection of 20,000 rock forms and Asia's largest Rose Garden.

The distance from Amritsar to Chandigarh is 240 km and time taken for travel is 6 hours. The major highways, National Highways 21 and 22 run throughout the cities and the roads are in good condition. If you are taking your own car, you will be treated to sceneries along the way, on either sides of the roads offer a pleasant drive.

Chandigarh can be easily reached by car, so hiring a cab for around Rs 13 to. 18 per km is a good option and takes around 5 hours.

There are Super Luxury Bus Services connecting Amritsar with Chandigarh. There are Punjab Government owned travel operators that have introduced air-conditioned Lexia buses on the Amritsar-Chandigarh route. The ticket price ranges from Rs. 300 upwards.

Chandigarh is connected to rest of India through Ambala and located at a diversion of Northern Railways from Ambala. There is only one direct train from Amritsar to Chandigarh, Amritsar-Chandigarh SF Express (12242) that takes 4 hours 30 minutes. The rest of the trains from Amritsar pass through Ambala.

People have to go to Ambala which is at a distance of 45 km from Chandigarh to catch a train for Amritsar. Chandigarh Railway Station is at a distance of around 10 km from the city and taxis, buses or auto-rickshaws are easily available.

There are many flights from Amritsar to Chandigarh with cheap airfares. Major airlines like Kingfisher, GoAir, Jetlite, Indigo, Spicejet and Indian airlines have regular flights from Amritsar to Chandigarh. But very few direct flights ply between the two cities since most go first to Delhi and then to Chandigarh. Because of this detour, flights take around 3 hours and are not the best choice for travel.
