The capital of Italy, Rome, was the center of the Roman Empire. For centuries, the city was the center of culture, power and religion. Cheap flights to Rome means, being able to visit the historic center of the city which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the place to see old churches, palaces, monuments, statues, ruins and fountains. While the city is extremely cosmopolitan, it has a rich historical heritage. Being able to visit the city can be an educative and humbling experience. The ruins of ancient Rome are present in Colosseo, which is located on either side of the Via dei Fori Imperiali. There are even some ruins of Roman Temples at Largo di Torre Argentina which are worth checking out. When vacationers cross the Tiber River, they will reach the Vatican area and first see the majestic Castel Sant Angelo. This is a mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. There is a corridor that connects this mausoleum to the Vatican. Visitors should also make it a point to visit the Baths of Caracalla, the tomb of Cecilia Metella, Villa dei Quintili and the Roman aqueduct.

There are over 900 churches in the city and some of the most popular ones include St. Peters, St. Pauls Outside the Walls, Santa Maria Maggiore and San Giovanni. In fact, these four are basilicas and highly popular among Christian pilgrims. The churches in the city are amazing. The dcor of some are classical, while others can be a little tacky with their electric candles. Some of the good examples of early Christian churches are Santa Costanza and San Clemente.

The city is also home to many museums, which are worth visiting. Villa Borghese area is home to Galleria Borghese, Museo Nazionale di Villa Giulia and Galleria Nazionale dArte Moderna. Be sure to visit the Vatican Museum, as this will also allow you to check out the Sistine Chapel. There is even a museum dedicated to how the city was liberated from the Germans during World War II. And, another unique museum in the city is the Musical Instruments Museum.
