Many projects are run here, allowing the volunteer to work closely with the wildlife in one of the most enthralling environments in the world. Projects are both short and long term and operate with assistance from the Conservation Department. The ecology of this great reserve is fragile and is undoubtedly the focus here. The projects aim to involve local communities and emphasise the importance of the conservation work going on in the reserve.
Pumba Game Reserve is another proactive reserve concerned with conservation research. Situated in the Eastern Cape province it is particularly special as five of Africas seven Vegetation Biomes occur here. And added to this, the incredible environment is home to one of only two known populations of White Lion living in South Africa. Projects here are extremely well supported and as a volunteer you will have access to professional guidance from the many experienced staff in the reserve. There are opportunities to study and attend lectures as well as joining outings in the field, both by jeep and on foot.
Choosing to get involved in conservation work on a reserve is always exiting but it can be hard work. Often you are expected to help out with every day tasks and duties and the days can be long and tiring. The rewards and justifications however, make it well worth it.
