subject: How The Generator Saved Christmas [print this page]

It was Christmas Eve and all through the house every creature was stirring, even my kids annoying pet mouse. See the power was out, on this dark December night, and the only way that Santa would find our place was if I could turn on a gal durn light. Candles were not cutting it as we huddled for warmth since the electric heat was out, and spirits sunk faster than the Enron stock. I looked out the window, and what did I see? My neighbors place all lit up and glowing with glee. A keen ear of mine did hear a soft rumbling, much like my lawnmower away in the garage. With steadfast resolution I struck out across the chilly lawn in hopes of saving Christmas come dawn.

With a heavy thud my fist hit the door, and I called out for Bobby, my neighbor from Yore.

Bobby?! I cried upon him reaching the door, Just how is your house lit and warm after the power was lost after that big storm?

Listen Charlie, he did say, I have got a generator chugging along. It is in the back, attached to the house, and kicks in when the power is out. I installed it last year in hopes of keeping up good cheer in a situation just as this, but you will be glad to know that Ive got a portable in the garage.

Not knowing what he meant, I inquired further and soon saw what was sure to be our savior for the morning. A portable generator, unassuming it sat, in the cold winter air. Neighbor Bobby helped me to heave and to lug the heavy thing next to my house. With a fresh tank of gas I started to pull on the stiff rip cord. After what seemed like hours it finally coughed to life with the exhaust condensing in the cold night air.

With extension cords running for miles I soon had my house lit and space heaters running. My family settled into the living room to consolidate warmth, and soon we were all fast asleep and cuddled up snug. When morning came around I topped of the generator, to keep the heat up and the smiles too, no longer were we living in an igloo. What did our eyes see as we went to the tree? A pile of presents addressed my family. My kids gave a whoop and a holler as they tackled the gifts, and my wife was kind enough to grant me a kiss.

Santa had come, and with him Christmas cheer after what could have been the coldest and most miserable night of the year. My neighbor Bobby is much to thank, but so is his generator that came in none too late. I have since purchased my own and it resides in the back, ready to power my house if the power is to go out of whack. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a electricity favored night.
