subject: The Reasons Marilyn Monroe Is Still Very Much A Style Icon [print this page]

Its been 50 years since the death of Marilyn Monroe yet why does her iconic image still live on? Marilyn was born in LA in 1926 as Norma Jeane Mortenson and was a world wide known American actress, model and singer who became a major fashion icon and sex symbol of her time.

Many people know Marilyn Monroe for her platinum blonde hair, bold red lips, womanly curves and classy dresses. The most famous image of Marilyn is the one of her in a white halter neck dress with the grate underneath her blowing it up in the air which was dubbed the subway dress. The younger generation who know of Monroe dont necessarily know of her movie success or talent but instead they know her to be the beautiful glamour goddess from old school Hollywood.

Marilyn stood out from the crowd with her beauty and has inspired many celebrities such as; Madonna, Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera who have all opted for her trademark hair and ruby red lips.

The reason Marilyn has stayed on as an icon well after her death is due to her combination of beauty, intelligence and talent. She starred in over 30 movies and she was the second woman to start her own production company amongst many other amazing achievements. One of them was when she sang Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden in New York City. She wore an outstandingly beautiful floor length dress covered in rhinestones which later sold for $1.2 million in an auction and, the subway dress sold for $5.6 million.

Marilyn revolutionized the way sex was viewed in the 1950s as she turned it into something fun in a society where it was viewed as dirty and shameful. She became a sex symbol and fashion icon through her choice of figure hugging yet sophisticated clothing which showed off her amazingly curvy figure. Today the fashion industries focus on less sophisticated clothing and instead have opted to produce tiny dresses, skirts and shorts to suit the trends.

A designer brand that is solely inspired by the era of Marilyn Monroe and bases their creations from the 1940s and 50s is; The Pretty Dress Company. The Pretty Dress Company offers a wide range of dresses to suit every style and shape, aiming to stay classy but also ooze sex appeal and sophistication at the same time. The dresses hold you in, push you up and hug all your curves in the right places which are the accomplished look of classy Marilyn Monroe in her heyday.
