There are several good wood-turning magazine available in the market, some of which are specifically dedicated to hobbyist of wood-turning and some for professional. To become a full-fledge professional wood-turner or add further skills to your professionalism, reading these wood-turning magazine can be very beneficial. Some of the wide-spread and most famous magazines for wood-turning are available from GMC publications. Available in monthly subscription, these magazines are spread across 60 countries worldwide. Furthermore, it is packed with features on wood-turners around the world, projects, reviews and tests, as well as tips, news and letters.

Some time back, I came across an issue from GMC publications' wood-turning magazine, which described the safety advice while turning a wooden object. Safety of yourself is the first thing that you must consider whenever you undertake any wood-turning project. Some of the safety advice which the magazine described are as under:

1.Be cautious about loose clothing, dangling jewelery, long hair and any other such object which might tangle up in the rotating lathe machine or drill press.

2.When the lathe is in motion, never try to adjust its speed or fiddle with any part of your workpiece, even when the lathe is freewheeling to stop.

3.Fence or guard the lathe machine and other power tools and make sure to check those at regular interval.

4.After making all the necessary changes and before starting the lathe, make sure that all the tools and items such as wrench, tommy bar, hammer, chuck keys, etc. are safely removed and kept aside from the lathe.

5.Whenever you start the lathe machine, always stand at some distance so that in case anything fly off from the lathe like loose bits or pen blank, you will be out of fire and be safe of such hazard.

6.Always check the set speed of the lathe before turning it on to avoid the risk of starting it on the high-speed.

7.When mounting a new project on the lathe, manually rotate the piece of wood 360 degrees by hand and if it is freely moving then only start the lathe for a trial run, but at its slowest speed. Once you feel that every is set and OK, you can set the lathe to its normal turning speed.

8.Wearing a protective gear is always a good idea and should be on priority. Safety glasses, dust mask and glows are essential and none of it should ever be ignored.

These were some of the safety advises that I came across in a wood-turning magazine. Other time I came across rules of turning, how tools work, how to maintain your tools, and much more. Wood-turning magazines is an ideal companion of wood-turner, and every wood-turner out there, whether professional or beginner, should subscribe for wood-turning magazine.
