subject: What Makes The Top Attorneys Different From All The Rest [print this page]

It all begins with a single step: taking up law and completing the course. Study and know the law by heart if you want to one day join the ranks of great lawyers. You will encounter cases that have taken place in the past years and decades. Of course, one of the primary things you will learn would be about the rights of individuals. You will learn how well to use the legal details enshrined in the statutes of the law to represent your various client. There are a lot of branches of the law you can concentrate on, including insurance law, sports law, among others.

But you should still continue learning, particularly about changes in the legal aspects, even if you have already graduated and are already in practice. Find and understand as much information as you can, and join circles of people that share opinions about this information. Being a part of the bar association is quite possibly the best way for you to stay ahead and be in the know. Here, you will find yourself among peers and contemporaries who share your interest in the law.

Even during law school, many aspiring lawyers (actually, even those who are already in practice) are eyeing a place in one of the most reputable law firms in the land. Some will find their way into such firms while still studying law. Rather than looking for fame by attaching to these firms, these individuals want the success of the firm to rub off on them and, eventually, use it in their favor. It is the best exposure and learning experience one would ever have, considering the fact that they will be witnessing the firm's lawyers in action.

A key element in any lawyer, even as he or she becomes successful, is to show respect to all people across the board. The way you speak and act and the things that you say and do are going to be indications that judges, your clients and other attorneys will be basing their assessment of you on. If you are a practicing lawyer, you should take note of everything you say or do in order to earn the respect of a judge. Treat your clients with respect and patience as you listen to their plight, so you will fully understand what they are going through. One thing you should remember, though: your clients came to you for your help, so do not let them ride roughshod over you. Keep in mind that you are there to represent your client, not judge them. Therefore, be objective and base your service on the facts given to you.

Keep in mind that a rule of confidentiality governs your relationship with your client. Once you or your team of lawyers take on a client's case, everything about the case will be kept confidential among you. Certain cases will be under the radar while others will be in the eye of the public. Those in the public limelight are highly sensitive and you should keep the client's interest first by withhold any information about the case that the public can use to create stories. If you have a client who is being held or detained while awaiting a court date, make it a point to always keep tabs on them. Above all, remember that all attorneys should maintain the truth as this is the virtue that governs a good justice system.
