subject: Simple Guide To Buying The Right Area Rug Sizes For Your Homes [print this page]

Using area rugs has been practiced by many homeowners nowadays. Aside from adding comfort amidst the cold floor, rugs can also give a lasting impression by bringing more life to a dull room. However, homeowners aren't that sure enough as to how to select the right size for a particular area or room. Oftentimes, they just buy rugs not thinking of their dimensions. In the end, the rug may not fit well with the room without even knowing that they are part to blame because of wrong rug size selection. Thus, before you buy a new set of rugs, make sure to read this guide first.

Know More about Rug Shapes and Sizes

Because most oriental rugs that come from India, Pakistan, China, India and other popular rug making destinations overseas have measurements that are based on American standards, it is safe to use feet or inches when referring to sizes. Some of the most common sizes include a 2'x3', 6'x9', 12'x18' and many other more. Purchasing circular rugs or shapes other than rectangular or square will be more of a challenge since you need to have a good estimate of the room's central point and decide the rug's measurement from there.

Choosing and Placing the Right Rug-Sizes

Having known how rugs are sized, it is about time for you to choose the rug with a suitable size for your place. Whether it is your home or workplace, first measure the total area where you want to place the rug before buying one. The most common technique when selecting rugs is to make sure that you leave some perimeter of floor visible to surround the rug. This will make your room look bigger, not to mention make it more beautiful to look at.

You also have to decide where the attention will be focused. Will it be at a particular corner of the room, specific furniture perhaps or just the rug itself? If your space is large, you may choose a rug bearing intricate patterns or styles to make a contrast. Also consider the color of the room and any visible styling from the ceiling down to the floor plus the furniture within it. If it is heavily styled, you may want a simpler rug so as not to overcrowd the area with lots of clashing designs. Avoid choosing the same rug color with the dominant room color so it won't look monotonous. Choose one that will provide a deep contrast to the surrounding.

If you really want to do things manually without all the computation, you may need to use a masking tape and mount it where you want the edges of your rug to be placed. This way you'll finally get the dimensions of the rug you want to buy. Also, it is advisable to add a 2-inch allowance to your measurements as a form of buffer to any margin of error.

Lastly, bear in mind that not all area rugs are to be placed at the center of the room. For instance, the rugs placed in the bedroom are best if placed at the foot of the bed or at its sides. If there are more than one bed, place the rug somewhere in between them. Nonetheless, for rugs that are centrally placed, make sure that they don't look off-center.
