subject: How To Prolong The Battery Life Of Your Iphone [print this page]

If you're like most people your iPhone is nearby all the time. You check your e-mail, browse the web, get traffic reports, chat on social media sites like Facebook, or Twitter, and do a whole host of other things with your iPhone. Unfortunately, all of those things can drain your battery life. Battery life varies by iPhone type and the plan you're using, but typical battery life is about 8 to 10 hours. If you need your battery to stay charged longer than that there are some things you can do.

Lock Your iPhone

It might seem pretty obvious, but locking your iPhone can actually help you conserve battery life. If you keep your iPhone in your pocket or purse, be careful about nearby materials touching the screen, and turning it on. Locking your iPhone can also prevent you from making unwanted calls, sending messages or changing settings on your phone accidentally.

Reduce Screen Brightness

Dimming your screen can help preserve battery life. To reduce your screen brightness select Settings -- Brightness and use the slider to lower screen brightness. You can also set the Auto-Brightness feature so screen brightness will change automatically based on lighting conditions. The Auto-Brightness feature can be found in the Brightness menu under Settings as well.

Use Airplane Mode

If you spend time in an area or building where you don't get coverage you should put your iPhone in airplane mode to preserve battery life. Your iPhone will constantly search for a signal until it gets one, and if you're in an area where a signal is unattainable, you'll lose battery life for nothing. You won't be able to receive or make calls in airplane mode, but if you can't get a signal you wouldn't be able to anyway.

Wi-Fi vs. Cellular Data

If you don't regularly use Wi-Fi on your iPhone you should turn it off to save battery power. However, if you commonly use your iPhone to browse websites and check e-mail at home you should use Wi-Fi instead of cellular data to preserve battery life.

EQ Settings

EQ settings related to music playback can decrease battery life. To turn off EQ settings go to Settings -- iPod -- EQ. Tap the EQ button to turn the equalizer off. If you use EQ settings in iTunes on your computer, you'll need to select Flat in EQ settings to preserve battery life because your iPhone remembers and employs the same iTunes settings you use on your computer.

Disable Bluetooth

If you don't use a Bluetooth headset or use Bluetooth to connect your iPhone to other wireless devices, leaving Bluetooth on can run your battery down for nothing. Select Settings -- General -- Bluetooth and disable it.

Turn off Diagnostics and Usage Reports

Diagnostics and usage reports are sent to Apple to help them improve iPhone performance, but sending these reports can drain your battery life. If you're on the road or don't have access to a charger you should disable them. To turn off diagnostics and usage reports select Settings -- General -- About -- Diagnostic & Usage -- Don't Send.

Check E-Mail Manually

One of the best things about having an iPhone is not having to check your e-mail manually all the time, but if you're traveling or just running out of battery life, setting your phone so you have to check e-mail manually can greatly increase your battery life. To check e-mail manually, go to Settings-- Mail, Contacts, Calendars -- Fetch New Data -- Push -- Off. Checking e-mail manually can also help you avoid data overages toward the end of the month if that's a problem for you.

If you just can't seem to make it through a whole day without charging your iPhone, you should get one of the best iPhone car chargers on the market. A high-quality car charger will charge your phone more efficiently and faster than less expensive ones.
