This airline has two affiliates, one, the Codeshare regional brand AmericanConnection. Second is the American Eagle, a regional subsidiary. Though growing from a conglomeration of some 82 small airline companies it has come a long way and is successfully carrying passengers all over the world now. This has enabled it to increase the connectivity across the globe too.

After this airline added Boeing 707 to its fleet it could operate non-stop flights from coast-to-coast. Feeder connections to cities in the old route for which Convair 990 and Lockheed Electras were used were maintained. Then to signify their commercial success that was growing leaps and downs Barbie dolls of stewardess of American Airlines were released. It was in 1967 that the airline logo was created and is still in use today.

The growth of this airlines company further enhanced by the acquisition of the Trans Caribbean Airways in 1971. Another feather in its cap is employing a female pilot, Bonnie Tiburzi, first in the world. The growth path did not stop there but continued with being the first in many respects. Computer reservation system, two-tier wage scale and frequent flyer loyalty were pioneered by this airline.

Japan and Europe were connected in the mid-eighties from the new hubs at DFW and Chicago OHare. The growth process continued and in the late eighties it resulted in opening three more hubs. This handled the north-south traffic. AirCal was purchased and this led to the addition of one more airport, the San Jose International Airport.
