subject: Continental Airlines: Where Consolidation Caused Rapid Growth! [print this page] Continental Airlines is a major airline in America operating from the year 1934 to 2012. In the year 2012 it merged with united airlines to form the United Continental Holdings Inc. The two airlines ran separate operations during the integration period. This was done under the direction of a combined leadership team that was a part of the Chicago based parent company.
Brand partnerships and ownership interests with many companies had been established by this airline. One example of such kind of partnership is being a minority owner of ExpressJet Airlines. It was a public company and was managed separately as the Continental Express. Under the identity of Continental Express, Chautauqua Airlines also operated. And under the continental connection identity Colgan Air, Cape Air, CommutAir and Silver Airways were running operations.
In the seventies, the central hub of continental continued to be Denver. In the Chicago-Los Angeles-Honolulu routes the 747s were used for a single trip through Denver. For the inter-city routes it was the DC-10 that carried passengers to and fro in the different routes. The routes covered were from los angles to Denver, Chicago, Honolulu and Houston and from Denver to Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Seattle. The 727 and DC-9 aircrafts were used in other routes. It was a cost-effective way to operate these flights.
The burgeoning traffic growth in the western part of the country helped the airline to capitalize on it because of the use of the aircraft DC-10. A healthy competition prevailed between the Continental and the United carriers in this route. The Polynesian Pub principle had been used initially and now the same was used with this aircraft also. In the mid seventies this airline merged with the Texas international and operated only the DC-10 and 727 aircrafts.
Customer service was given importance and it showed in the service that was offered at every point of the operation. This was a trigger for growth along with the policy of consolidation. This airline has been considered by fortune magazine and NASA for environment contributions in a positive way. It has Codeshare agreement with various airline companies like Avianca, Copa Airlines, Cape Air and so on.
