subject: Sony Releases The New Nex-6 Compact System Camera [print this page]

Sony recently launched a new model in its NEX range of mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras. The latest NEX-6 compact system camera from Sony has the shooting responses, imaging power, handling and operability of a DSLR (Digital single-lens reflex) into a pocket-sized mirrorless camera. The 16.1MP NEX-6 is actually nearer to the recently-launched NEX-5R as far as technology and feature set is concerned. It features the 2.3-million-dot OLED viewfinder, as well as, the built-in flash, which were first used on the NEX-7. This is the first NEX camera featuring some conventional analog controls rather than the menu-intensive approach that is used by the other models. The NEX-6's customizable Fn button, mode selector dial, control dial and Quick Navi display makes the camera intuitive and convenient in operation.

The 16.1-megapixel NEX-6 provides big-sensor picture efficiency in a pocket-sized body. The NEX-6 features a strategically-positioned mode dial atop the camera that enables quick setting of shooting modes that include (but not limited to) P/A/S/M and Sweep Panorama. There is also a control dial placed under the mode dial along with a separate control wheel on the back of camera for fine tuning of exposure, white balance, ISO and other settings. The availability of the pro-focused Quick Navi interface in high-end A-mount cameras by Sony allows users to coordinate settings without taking their eyes off the viewfinder.

The NEX-6 initially uses phase-detection AF with 99 points that are arrayed on the sensor for determining the subject's distance and for quickly locking focus. The camera uses contrast-detection AF, with 25 points, for slightly modifying focus to allow extremely fine and precise details.

The in-built Wi-Fi enables videos and photos to be transferred wirelessly to a tablet or smartphone though running free PlayMemories Mobile app of Sony. This app is available for Android and Apple iOS platforms. You can also upload content straight from the camera to Facebook by using a Wi-Fi connection, and also, the new "Direct Upload" app that is part of the new PlayMemories Camera Apps platform of Sony. This new application also makes the NEX-6R the first of its kind interchangeable-lens camera featuring a download service, which allows users to set up new functions on demand; thus, tailoring their cameras to fit their individual shooting requirements. The service will be available over Wi-Fi or when the camera is connected straight to a computer via a USB cable.

Regardless of its compact body dimensions, the camera provides instantly reassuring operation for DSLR enthusiasts.
