subject: Discover The Three Main Islands Of Grenada [print this page] The state of Grenada is made up of a group of islands, most of which are very small. There are three main islands in the group, called Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
This is a quick guide to these three so that you know what to expect when you book your stay in the Calabash Hotel. Its time to get out and explore!
Grenada
Grenada is the main island and it is also the biggest. It is the location of numerous luxury hotels, such as the Calabash Hotel, which are found all over the island including the capital city of St Georges. There is an international airport on the island, which makes travelling here from anywhere in the world convenient. The tourist industry here is also a lot more developed on the other islands, making this the most popular destination.
Highlights to see on this island include Mount St Catherine which, at 840 metres, is the highest point on the island; Grand Anse Beach, which is one of the best beaches in the whole of the Caribbean; the historic Clark's Court Distillery; and the fascinating Gouyave Nutmeg Factory.
Carriacou
Carriacou is the second-largest island in the group, but at only 13 square miles it is a lot smaller than Grenada. The main town on the island is Hillsborough, but there are a number of smaller towns such as Tibeau and LEsterre.
The beaches here make it well worth making a trip if you are staying on the island of Grenada in one of the luxury hotels like the Calabash Hotel. Some of these, like the one found at Carenage Bay, near to the town of Harvey Vale, are composed of black volcanic sand, whereas others, such as Anse La Roche, are classic white sand beaches.
You can fly here directly from the island of Grenada or even from nearby countries such as Barbados. There is also the option of catching a ferry from Grenada. Highlights include an ancient Amerindian Well located in Harvey Vale, the Carriacou Museum in Hillsborough, and High North Peak, which is the highest point of the island. You may also want to go snorkelling in the White Island Marine Park.
Petite Martinique
Petite Martinique is the third-largest island in the group that makes up the nation of Grenada. It is very small and only has a population of 1,000 people. Tourist facilities are available, but they are limited. The best way to visit this island is from Carriacou. There are a few places to eat and a few pleasant beaches, but it is not the sort of place you want to stay for too long. However, a trip here will allow you to see a place not many have a chance to experience.
Explore the Islands of Grenada
The islands of Grenada all have something different to offer the visitor. Many people stay on the larger of the islands, Grenada, and base themselves in one of the luxury hotels like the Calabash Hotel. However, there is more to this island nation than just one location, so consider visiting the other islands in the group if the opportunity arises.
