subject: Sony Releses Worlds First 35mm Full-frame Handycam Camcorder [print this page]

Sony has recently announced the NEX-VG900, which is a full-frame NEX camcorder together with the VG30 APS-C model, as well as, an 18-200mm powerzoom lens for APS-C E-mount cameras. The handycam is designed around Sony's 24MP sensor, which also appears in the RX1 and SLT A99. It confirms the concept that the E-mount can support a 36x24mm sensor. The absence of full-frame E-mount lenses means that the VG900 should be used with an adapter like the LA-EA3 that allows the utilisation of full-frame A-mount lenses. A third 18-200mm lens is added by the SELP-18200 E PZ 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 to the NEX system with a lever-controlled enabled zoom for video work.

As per Sony, the handycam's full-frame sensor provides many advantages that you get, when you shoot still images with a full-frame DSLR (Digital single-lens reflex), such as good performance in low light, dramatically shallow depth-of-field effects, capturing much greater detail and a larger range of colors. The NEX-VG900 can shoot 1080p AVCHD Progressive video (28Mbps) at 60fps and 24fps along with 24.3-megapixel stills in RAW, JPEG or RAW+JPEG format. It also allow to capture frames as still images when you record video; however, resolution for those images is confined to 1920-by-1080 resolution (2.1 megapixels). The NEX-VG900 has a brand-new Multi Interface Shoe, which works with a new XLR adapter kit to allow you to conjoin higher-end shotgun mics.

Beautiful and film-like results can be obtained by shooting video in 24p progressive mode with CinemaTone Color and CinemaTone Gamma presets, for precisely controlling cinematic grading effects. In addition to this, AVCHD version 2.0 standard 60p recording optimizes the range of creative options that movie-makers can explore. Even greater flexibility is offered by a choice of new Picture Effect modes, providing easy composition of artistic in-camera treatments. If you are shooting stills or HD video, Picture Effects provide a new level of expression to content. There are many modes and effects that make ordinary images and scenes come to life. Some of the effects are mentioned below:

1. Posterization

It produces a high contrast abstract look through heavily emphasizing primary colors or white and black.

2. Retro Photo

It develops the look of an aged image with sepia color tones and faded contrast.

3. Pop Color

It creates a vivid look by emphasizing color tones.

4. Partial Color

It creates stunning monochrome images containing a single designated color (green, blue, red or yellow).

A unique Quad Capsule Spatial Array Microphone provides 4 omni-directional capsules, which can be switched for getting stereo or 5.1ch surround recording. Moreover, recording levels can be adjusted with accurate visual confirmation offered by an audio level meter on the LCD display.
