subject: Top To Bottom Home Cleaning [print this page]

Everyone has his or her own method for home cleaning. Some plan it all out in advance and follow through with it. Others just haphazardly work their way around the living space until the place looks presentable. While you can start in any room of the house, consider taking on a top to bottom approach the next time you notice that your place is not as clean as you would like it to be. You can take advantage of the practical implications of this method.

Start at the Top

Why start at the top when it comes to home cleaning? When you start brushing off the dust from the fans, where is it going to go? Right to the floor. You don't want to do double duty on any part of your space, so start up high. If you aren't sure exactly where to start, just look up. You may have light fixtures or fans that need to be dusted. You may have curtains that need to be shaken out or dry cleaned. Either way, start there and begin to work your way down.

Because you have a set starting point, you can always be sure where you left off. Most people are not able to set aside one chunk of time for home cleaning. They work on it here and there when they have some time. When you go from top to bottom, you can look in any room and clearly see where you left off and what needs to be done. When you walk into a room that has a vacuumed or scrubbed floor, you know your job is done.

Handle Everything in the Middle

The middle is where most of your work will be. Look around any given room in your house. You'll notice that your dressers, your bed, your kitchen table and counters, even your entertainment center falls into this middle ground area. Aside from top to bottom, many men and women then move from left the right. They begin to clean anything that they come into contact with as they make their way around the room.

If you want to stay on task as you work in one room, consider bringing in a bag or basket. When you come across something that does not belong in the room, toss it into the bag and come back to it later. This is a great job for other members of the house. If you have cleaned, let them put away all of the things you found lying around.

Work on the Floors

Now that the hard work is done, get started on those floors. This is your last home cleaning step. You can sweep, vacuum, and mop and know that the end it near. Once a room is complete, shut the door and move on. At the end of the day, you can easily look around and see all of your accomplishments starting with the top and working your way down.
