subject: Elaborate Procedure On How The Surgery Will Be Carried Out [print this page]

Laser eye surgery is a common surgical procedure used for the correction of myopia [a condition where you suffer from proper near sighted vision], astigmatism and hyperopia, [farsighted vision]. In any of the laser eye surgery procedures the operations is done on the cornea and the overall duration of the surgery does not extend to few minutes in most of the cases. An intense, high quality and high precision ray of light through a microscope is employed in the surgical process.

Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis or better known as LASIK is a very famous laser eye surgery procedure in which a thin flap of tissue is cut. The tissue is then peeled back from the very front of the cornea. The laser light will vapourise some of the corneal tissue beneath the flap to make the cornea of a slightly different shape to ensure correction in the refractive error of the eye. The flap is then placed back over the front of the eye. LASIK laser eye surgery is generally used to correct short-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

Latest technology available

Wavefront LASIK is the latest generation technology used to treat refractive visual errors, as used for example with Technolas Perfect Visions ZYOPTIX. Platform. It is capable of providing the most technologically advanced measurement of the optical system, enabling the surgeon to plan a treatment that exactly matches the individuals vision errors. This technology is based on the principle that if an eye has no imperfections, light passing through it would not scatter. But as no eye is perfect, light scatters to form a distinct pattern- called a Wavefront. This Wavefront map is then used diagnostically for pre-operative screening and post-surgical analysis.

Who are eligible

Like any other surgical process, Laser Eye surgery cannot be done on everybody. Although, Laser Eye surgery can be helpful to anyone with eye sight issues, there can be certain individuals whose eye sight cannot be improved even with the most advanced of all process. If you want to find out if you are eligible for a Lasik Laser Eye Surgery please consult your doctor now for a confirmation. You should also note the fact that laser eye surgery will not be undertaken until the patients eyesight has stopped changing. Usually, the eyesight condition will reach a point where it wont get any worse. If youre one of those whos considering having a laser eye surgery, please make sure your eye sight has long stopped changing. Otherwise, you would have to go back to glasses and contact lenses post surgery.

Pros and cons

The long-term implications of LASIK laser eye surgery (i.e. beyond 10 years or so) on the health of eyes cannot really be assured for certain. Some cases of corneal ectasia have been reported where an abnormal bulging of the cornea had taken place. Currently, however this only appears to be a problem if you have had LASIK for a very high prescription, e.g. for myopes around -10. There also is a lot of discussion taking place over whether the flap created in Laser eye surgery really will heal to the point where the eye is as strong as it was before the procedure took place. Like any other surgery, this surgery also has its own risks associated. The most common side effects are the development of halos, sudden glares or double visions which can affect the normal or night visibility. After the eye surgery procedure, careful precautions are to be taken as the patients eyes would be dryer than the normal because the eyes will not be able to produce the tears in order to keep his eyes moist and comfortable. However, the laser eye surgery will allow normal sight without the use of contact lens or spectacles. If you have the laser eye surgery procedure done on you yourself before the eye degrees have stopped changing (especially in cases of astigmatism) then the vision may continue to get worse even after the eye surgery and after a period of time you may notice that you are unable to see clearly and need to go back to either contact lens or glasses. So, understanding your suitability for laser eye surgery is a very important factor which any laser eye surgeon can guide you through.

Some stats on how percentages of people are increasing to undergo surgery.

Having said that, around 100,000 people tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses, undergo corrective laser eye surgery in the UK every year. 98%. Percent of Lasik wavefront patients (low to moderate nearsightedness patients) achieving 20/20 vision.

92%. Percent of nearsighted patients achieving 20/20 vision after undergoing non-surgical orthokeratology treatment at one California practice.

92%. Percent of nearsighted Navy recruits that attained 20/20 vision after undergoing Lasik in a study by a U.S. Navy ophthalmologist.

90%. Percent chance of getting 20/20 vision with Lasik.

45% to 83%. Percent of mildly myopic Lasik patients that achieve 20/20 vision or better.

26% to 57%. Percent of moderately nearsighted Lasik patients that achieve 20/20 vision.

The Lasik procedure although very beneficial, is not recommended for anyone who:

is under 18

is pregnant

has a history of eye disease including optic nerve damage, cataracts or problems with the cornea such as corneal thinning

has extremely large pupils (bigger than 7mm can cause problems with Lasik)

has very thin corneas

has very strong prescriptions
