subject: Abortion What People Are Saying [print this page]

Many people have different views about abortion. Some are in favor of abortion and consider it a womans right, and others say it is inhumane. No matter what your view, it is a sensitive matter. Terminating a pregnancy is not an easy choice for any woman.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1970, advocates of women's rights have met with various controversies. The point of contention has been whether a woman has the right to make her own decision regarding her body. Even today, women face great criticism from pro-life groups and people opposing abortion. Many clinics and health facilities offering abortion services have also been affected by pro-life groups. Several clinics were burnt and gynecologists attacked by these groups in past years.

The number of picketers and protesters has seemed to dwindle in the past few years, but they remain zealous in their goals. A young woman who feels that she has made the right decision is inundated by ads and bumper stickers declaring her a person guilty of taking a life. This situation finds most women refusing to talk about their decision.

Recently, pro-lifers took their campaign to a new level. They now proclaim that once a woman conceives, termination of pregnancy at any time is considered a murder. So, along with the personal issues a woman has to face during her pregnancy, she also has to deal with the guilt whether she is committing a murder or not. When the pregnancy involves rape or incest, the idea of terminating the pregnancy can take a whole new meaning. Pro-lifers state that the fetus is not to blame in regard to how it was conceived and the child inside has the right to be born. The advocates, on the other hand, claim that a pregnant woman has the right to decide for herself as well as the new life developing insider her.

Activists and pro-lifers will undoubtedly carry this heated debate far into the future. Although abortion services are readily available for all across the nation, there are some that will shy away rather than take a chance on being considered a marked woman. The first thing that needs to be done is for all outside rhetoric to be ignored. What is right for one person may be wrong for another; but the right of choice remains.

No matter what pro-lifers claim about abortion and related services, terminating the pregnancy is not an easy decision to make for any woman. This decision is not reached lightly either. When a woman schedules an appointment with a gynecologist and states her wish to abort her fetus, her health and pregnancy is checked by a doctor who will also discuss with her every aspect of abortion as well as her options. Medical personnel want to make sure that the women is as comfortable as possible with whatever decision she makes.

Every woman is given the opportunity to examine other alternatives at abortion care clinics. The possibility of keeping their child or putting it up for adoption is also discussed.
