subject: Risks, Recovery And Your Breast Enhancement Surgery [print this page]

The first step in getting breast enhancement surgery is making sure you are a candidate. A good candidate for the surgery is a healthy weight and has healthy expectations. To see if you are a good candidate in your doctor's opinion you will first have to have a visit with him or her and discuss potential sizes, incisions, anesthesia, and weigh risks and benefits.

The biggest risks for patients getting saline implants are a 28% chance of re operation due to rupture. When a saline implant ruptures it deflates. There will be no mistaking that it has deflated. The good news is that saline rupture poses no harm to you it just makes you look lopsided. A patient may need to remove the other implant as well or replace the deflated one. Some other risks include a loss or altered sense of feeling, post operative bleeding or infection, hardening or pain. Some patients will determine that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Of course a discussion you and your surgeon will have is what type of implant you will use. Both types have a silicone outer shell. The filling on the inside of the implant is either saline or silicone. A silicone implant is favored by women who are looking for a more natural look and feel. Saline is available to woman at least eighteen years of age. Silicone is available to woman age twenty-two and older. A woman seeking reconstructive surgery can have either type at any age.

When preparing for your surgery your surgeon will discuss anesthesia with you. You will receive pain relief for your comfort before and after surgery. Your surgeon will perform your surgery as a day surgery. This type of procedure can even be done in office. When surgery is over you will be in recovery. It will be important to wear a surgical bra and one will be provided. You should be discharged in a few hours unless your surgeon believes it is best for you to stay for observation.

Recovery is important. While it is suggested that you take it easy it is also suggested you get up and walk for a few minutes every few hours. This will keep blood clots from forming in your legs. You will need to follow up after breast enhancement surgery to be sure you are healing properly. Depending on your tasks at work you may be able to return as soon as two weeks after surgery. You will need to be careful with your breasts for as long as a month post surgery. Results should be immediate. Once swelling goes down you will see full results. Discuss any pain or concerns with your doctor.
