From the beginning of time man has had a fascination to man. Early man was drawn to its glittering beauty when they were found as sparkly pebbles in the sand and in rivers. Nature gives us these gemstones as her most rarest and precious of beautiful treasures and we now use these to create unique handmade jewellery. Jewellery handcrafted from the natural stones can be found on every high street in the land in the form of rings, pendants, jewellery sets, bracelets and earrings.

Gemstones are considered more expensive than semi-precious gemstones as they are rarer and harder to find and to be considered a true gemstone it has to have the following 3 qualities. One is the clarity and purity of the stone, the second is the colour and this has to be true and clear and the natural beauty of the stone. The majority of gemstones are created from minerals with only a few exceptions and these are lapis Lazuli which is a rock in a stunning deep blue colour and many examples have small pieces of pyrite in the stone that gives it its sparkle. Jet and amber are organic materials but these are classed as gemstones, Amber is petrified tree sap and the beautiful black gemstone jet is created from trees. Whitby in North Yorkshire Great Brittan is the most famous place in the world for its jet and the most beautiful and jewellery unique in designs can be found from here.

It was the Greeks that first started to classify gemstones and this is when the first distinction between semi-precious gemstones and precious gemstone was made. There were two distinctions made between these beautiful sets of natural stones. The rarest and of the stones were given the name precious gemstones and these include the diamond, the sapphire, the ruby and the emerald. Other natural stones like Rose Quartz, Turquoise, Amethyst, Aventurine and Jade were given the name semi-precious because these stones could be found in abundance. You can see both the precious and the semi-precious stones used constantly in the designs of pieces of handmade jewellery and jewellery handcrafted from these stones can be found from this era in many museums.

Fashions have changed so much since these times but we still see these being used by jewellery designers and jewellery unique in designs can be found that include these stones and handcrafted jewellery in both traditional and modern designs can be found. Turquoise earrings, Diamond bracelets, Ruby pendants, Jade necklaces and jewellery handcrafted from Black and Green Onyx can be found in most high street jewellery stores.

Some gemstones are used in their natural crystal forms in pieces of jewellery and others are cut and polished into beads, pendants and cabochons to create handmade jewellery into unique and original designs. These stones can be tumbled in a lapidary machine or some are polished on a grinding wheel and both methods will need polishing agents to be able to achieve the smooth finish. Some of the precious stones that reflect the light can have a faceted cut and this will maximise the effect of the reflected light and the best effects of a faceted cut can be found in diamonds and rubies. I am sure that every woman in the world would like a sparkling diamond sitting on her finger.

Today in the world of fashion the design of the piece of handcrafted jewellery is starting to take precedence over the gemstones themselves. We are all looking for something that is unique and original as well as being fashionable and set with semi-precious stones. Jewellery unique in designs is becoming more popular with the younger generation so this is why we are fining more modern and contemporary pieces of jewellery handmade from semi-precious stones. You will find everything earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings in all these collections.
