There are a lot of aspiring salesmen out there. The problem is that very few of them have ever worked in sales and many will try and fail at the profession. This is because most people do not know what it takes to be a salesperson. They think that they know what it takes and that they have it, but they're really deluded and will spend a lot of time struggling to make ends meet in a sales job before they admit defeat and discover something different to do.

If you are looking at sales positions then you really need to make sure that you have what it takes to be a sales person before you decide to waste your time and your employers cash attempting to do something that you're not truly meant to do.

The first thing that you are going to require if you want to take a look at filling any of the sales positions that are out there is a superb personality. You need to be able to speak with individuals with confidence and not have an ounce of shyness inside you. You need to be loud and be able to speak to anyone, regardless of what they look like. This isn't something that everyone is able to do though.

Additionally you need to be able to adapt to different types of individuals. You don't want to have one approach that actually works with one kind of person and then try to apply it to each person who walks into your office. An introverted person may be intimidated by you if you are too loud whilst an extroverted individual might feel like you are not confident if you are not loud and thus will not take you at your word.

You need to be able to learn your products rapidly and thoroughly. You can't afford to um and ah and be unsure of facts about your products. You need to know everything there is to know about it and how it compares to similar merchandise. You have to know when your product is going to meet the needs of your prospective client and when it's just not going to work for them and you need to have the guts to be honest about it. You don't want to have unhappy clients returning to you and demanding a refund.

Sales positions are not some thing for everybody. The old saying "must be able to sell ice to Eskimos" is a valid one. If you don't have the confidence to persuade someone that your product or service is better than others then you're never going to make money. If this isn't you, if you are not a confident person, then don't waste your time with sales positions. There are much better choices out there for you. If you fail to adapt your own character then attempt something else. If you cannot learn and memorise facts about a range of products, then keep looking. If you can do all of this, then give product sales a try!
