subject: Replace The Tiles In Your Home [print this page]

Redecorating your home is often high on the list of a homeowners priorities, but the perceived cost of doing so can often deter many. This is particularly the case when it comes to speciality rooms like the kitchen and bathroom, where it is commonly thought redecorating will cost many thousands of pounds. But, the reality is that the actual cost can be a lot less. Making extensive changes to cabinet or bathroom suites might be costly, but giving these rooms a tasteful makeover certainly is not and a lot can be achieved without much financial outlay. The first step is to realistically assess what needs to be done and to start planning a way to achieve the most without the greatest cost. Small elements can make a large difference and something as inexpensive as changing your door handles and light fixtures can add an instant sense of renewed vitality to your room.

Perhaps the most important consideration is to be realistic in what you can achieve. Though that being said, if you spend some time finding the best deals and are able to undertake the majority of work yourself, there is no reason why you cannot effect a dramatic transformation for less than the cost of a smart meal out for two. For bathrooms, perhaps the most dramatic change you can make (short of changing your entire suite) is to replace the tiling. Surprisingly, this is not as expensive as you might think and can be achieved quickly and easily within the space of a weekend. Indeed, if you carefully remove your old tiles, you might find that you can sell them back to the store to partially offset the cost of your new ones. The best approach when replacing ceramic tiles is to find a style that complements your existing colour scheme without being too busy or fustian. It is often the case that the smartest looks are the simplest, so consider some of the plainer styles first and always ask for a couple of samples so that you can test them at home. Do not forget that you can always add splashes of colour afterwards with the addition of design elements like pictures, towels and other fixtures.

The same principle is true of kitchen renovation, with the additional factor that as well as replacing your ceramic tiles, you can also replace kitchen cabinet doors to create a rapid and dramatic transformation that will cost a fraction of a total replacement.
