subject: Retaining Walls For Landscape Designs [print this page]

Every time a brand new office park is built or a new house or a new estate of some type there's some type of landscaping to be carried out. It is sometimes simple, in other cases it may get rather intricate with terraces and that type of thing. The more intricate type of landscaping occasionally need a lot more expertise and will require some different strategies to do correctly. In the event that terraces aren't done right then they might just fall down and deteriorate.

The best thing to use if you are planning to be creating terraces as part of your landscaping task is a retaining wall. This will give the sides of the terrace something to lean against and will help to prevent it from slipping as well as sliding onto the rest of your lawn and becoming a hillock rather than a terrace. Here is how everything works.

A retaining wall is made up of a number of bricks. The bricks are usually produced from cement and have a curved side and a straight side. They'll have a hollow in the middle. They really appear a lot like a half circle of concrete. The base of the retaining wall will be a good deal further out as well as longer or wider than the top layer. It's constructed in a pyramid style with every layer being slightly further back and somewhat shorter than the one below. The region inside the retaining wall is filled with sand and rocks along with other fillers as the wall goes up. This provides the next layer with something to rest on other than the bricks beneath it. The height the wall goes to will depend on how high you would like the patio to be and how much space you have.

The actual holes in the centre of the concrete bricks could be filled with dirt as well as plants can be planted in them to cover the actual wall and make everything appear more great looking. The rest of the yard can naturally slope upward around the sides of the retaining wall or steps can be laid into the side of the wall to allow access to the top level if preferred. The options are literally limitless.

It is important that the retaining wall be set up correctly however. If the bricks aren't laid properly or don't have adequate support the wall may crumble under the strain of keeping back all of the dirt behind it and you will end up with a large mess in your backyard. If you are not certain how it should be done it is best to obtain a professional landscaping team to come in and get the job done for you.

As you can see, the retaining wall is actually a great invention and it opens up a lot of doors for creative landscapers. It does need to be done properly though or it won't look nice nor will it be as durable as it ought to. Have fun with your landscaping and retaining walls though!
