subject: Seize the Day? [print this page] Are you a fan of post-apocalyptic drama? Do you think you have seen every approach possible? Well, you probably have. The Day is not like anything you havent already experienced before, but it does the job of adding entertainment value to your evening. A fun, young cast and the notion that life after our populations and planet are all but destroyed makes it one worth watching.
So, instead of having what we lovingly refer to as zombies, they call them cannibals. I suppose that if there is little food in the earthly wasteland that we brought upon ourselves, it would only make sense to eat other humans. Personally, I think I would rather just die than eat my friends or family, but thats just me.
In trying to find greener pastures, literally, a group of young adults wanders a bit before settling into an old house and that is where most of your movie takes place. This hide me away from the man eating killers is not the first time the screen has seen this concept, but perhaps it will sound some alarms in our minds that we could actually end up that way.
In watching movies such as this one, or even Mad Max and Waterworld, you quickly get a feel for what comforts we take for granted and that maybe we should try harder at achieving peace in our world and clearing our landfills. One day, there will be many things that our posterity wont know ever existed, things that will be luxuries to them in a frightening world of disease, decay and cannibals.
It definitely strikes a chord when you see someones belongings broken or family pictures askew. What if that were your home? What if you were forced to leave out of desperation or fear? What items would you take if all you had was carried on your back? How would you explain it to your family? If you were given warnings, would you heed them or think the authorities were just full of it?
Ive learned in my lifetime to seize the day. Carpe Diem. You will never know when your number is up or when the world will fall apart. Some say that is coming at the end of 2012. Do you believe it? Could this be our warning that we dismiss? Im not one of the Doomsdayers, but I do believe that we are on the path of self destruction and will live out scenes that we have witnessed on the big screen one day. I hope I am not around to see it.
Nevertheless, the movie was worth seeing. Dominic Monaghan, Shawn Ashmore, and Ashley Bell work well together to make it an enjoyable flick. It is nice to see Monaghan in a completely different role than his very famous part in Lord of the Rings the trilogy. It is always great to see an actor step out of the role they have been stereotyped in and surprise us, like the part he played in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He has a great career ahead of him being a very versatile piece of Hollywood.
