The modern society with its inherent advantages has also created a number of vices that includes addiction to and abuse of alcohol and drugs. The recreational use of alcohol and drugs has often turned the tables on the users in the form of alcohol/drug abuse and addiction. This has resulted in deadly consequences such as domestic violence, car accidents and physical violence. As per the statistics available with the National Center for Health Statistics about 79,000 deaths are caused by alcohol abuse in the United States and this number does not include homicides and car accidents. Deaths caused due to liver disease and other related health problems due to alcoholism number about 12,300 each year.

The other cause of concern is the rising road deaths due to fatal car accidents or crashes due to alcohol and drug abuse. It has been found that more than half of the U.S. drivers killed in car accidents had alcohol or drugs in their system at the time of crash. In all out of 20,150 fatally injured drivers for periods between 2005 and 2009 57 percent were tested positive for at least one drug out of which alcohol was the most common drug that is followed by marijuana and stimulants that included amphetamines. Now there is need for alcohol and rehabilitation programs to be implemented effectively in order to free people from alcohol and drug abuse. There are over ten thousand alcohol and drugs rehab centers in the United States and most of them are structured around the 12-step recovery cum rehabilitation programs. These programs are relying on the original proven methods as the foundation for healing.

The first step of the recovery process involves accepting the fact by the addicted person by implementing CAGE questions on him or her. These questions are abbreviated version of the word CAGE that stands for CUT, ANNOYANCE, GUILTY and EYE-OPENER questions.
