subject: Signs You Will Benefit From Couples Counseling [print this page]

Though many think of couples counseling as being the type of task for broken marriages and struggling relationships, this is not always the case. In fact, visiting when you have a healthy, positive relationship can be a good thing as well. Your relationship is made up of two people. There are going to be times when each of you has your own opinion and concerns. You will not always agree, but you can always work together to come to a solution. The key is to know when it is time to get additional help from a third party professional.

Intimacy Isn't Happening

A key component of marriage is intimacy. If you cannot remember the last time you enjoyed the company of your significant other, it may be time for couples counseling. Physical intimacy is an important part of a strong relationship. If you are lacking it, it is time to find out why that is.

You Put Off Date Nights

If you are putting in extra hours at work and doing it because you are avoiding date night, there is something wrong there that needs addressing. Often, you need to make this decision on your own. Is there really something going on in your marriage that is causing you to avoid such interactions and alone time?

Your Emotions Are Intense

In some cases, just being around your significant other leads to intense, negative emotions. You may not even know why this is the case. For example, you may feel mad or sad just being around the other person. You may be fearful or you may be anxious. Every marriage or relationship is going to have times when things do not feel well. However, your relationship should be positive and happy overall. If not, seek additional help.

Fighting Is Common

If you find that you and your significant other spend more time fighting than talking, that is a real problem with plenty of underlying tensions involved. The good news is that you can often work through these concerns with the aid of a professional. If petty things are driving the two of you apart, do something about it now to avoid the long-term risk of developing underlying, painful emotions too hard to manage.

Couples counseling is one way to get to the bottom of what is really affecting your relationships health and your mental state. If you put it off, these concerns are likely to develop and grow under the surface until they are nearly impossible to control. That is when you know you need to do something to get change. A good step in the right direction is to find a counselor you feel you can trust and to talk with that person as a couple. That is the first step in fixing the problems.
