Hi! This is DrHi! This is Dr. Barry Lycka, host and founder of yourcosmeticdoctor.tv. I'm so glad to be writing articles for you about some of the newest advances in the world of beauty and cosmetic surgery.

Well, today we're going to go back down history lane to learn a little bit about the history of cosmetic surgery and find out about some of the interesting things that have happened as plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery have developed through the ages.

So I will start by answering a very frequently asked question - 'when did plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery begin?'

Well as we look back in history, there are reports of early attempts at plastic or cosmetic surgery over 4,000 years ago. These reports documented events where people were injured in battle or by an animal attack, and doctors were doing something to repair it.

Later around 800 years before B.C., there are documented reports of these early attempts at cosmetic surgery coming from India. See, it used to be a common practice to cut off people's ears or things like that after a crime. Well, a doctor back then sewed one back on and this was one of the first reports of cosmetic surgery being done.

Then in ancient Greek times, the Greeks got very good at doing cosmetic surgery. In fact when Alexander the Great invaded Egypt, he took his whole school of medicine to Egypt. Now everybody knows that Cleopatra was one of the greatest beauties of all time. It's reported that she had cosmetic surgery. They did things to make her look better.

Now over the years, medicine evolved cosmetic surgery skills and techniques very gradually. There were periods of time when it moved forward quickly and periods of time when it moved back. The ancient medical writer Aulus Cornelius Celsus wrote in De Medicina a large report about cosmetic surgery and how it could be done. Unfortunately, that was lost during the Dark Ages.

During the Dark Ages, there was a trend not to do any cosmetic surgery, in fact it was illegal. One of the popes of the Middle Ages decided that doing cosmetic surgery was wrong. It was evil and they outlawed it and this went on for hundreds of years. But gradually, people saw the need for it. They saw the benefit that cosmetic surgery could create.

Moving forward to more recent history, in 1827, an American doctor did one of the first cleft palate repairs. This was amazing because this was before we really understood about sterility and infection control. During the American Civil War, there were some advances in cosmetic surgery of the reparative type. The driving force of military conflict and the terrible injuries caused by it continue to this day to push the boundaries, thinking and skills in what can be achieved in cosmetic surgery today.

In 1907, Dr. Charles Miller wrote one of the first textbooks on cosmetic surgery then there were other doctors that gave a lot to cosmetic surgery, Dr. Luckett, Dr. Blair, Dr. Kolle. And overall, cosmetic surgery has advanced.

During the First World War, there was a big advantage to developing more skills in cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. More people were getting wounded, more people were getting injured. People were surving with more facial wounds so some of the doctors started doing more and more cosmetic surgery to help repair them, and during the Second World War skills and knowledge advanced even more.

And since the Second World War, we have seen huge advances. We have seen lasers being used. We have seen liposuction developed to the point that it's an easy procedure for a qualified physician to do, something with very low risk and something with high enjoyment. There are many cosmetic surgery trends developing as patients demand less invasive and longer lasting results.

Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery is something that is being done daily and it's something that people should enjoy and rejoice in. They shouldn't live with things that they don't want. They should seek out the most appropriate cosmetic surgery information and advice, get them done and live a better, fuller life. That's what I'm all about, living better.
