subject: Analyzing The Importance Of Face Recognition Software [print this page]

The face recognition software captures a given face and then changes it into a template. This is then kept in the computer's database. When a new face is provided to this system, it compares this with those already present in the image database and then brings out the perfect match.

Points taken into consideration

Everybody knows that each face is unique and has features which are exclusive to it in every manner. The system defines these features as specification nodal points. There are in total 80 criterions which are taken into consideration. Some of them include

Nose width

Cheekbone shape

Jawline length

Eye socket depths

Between eyes distance

All these 80 characters together constitute a face-print which is saved in the database in the form of numerical codes. Whenever new information is fed the system starts matching it up with those available in the system and brings out the one which resembles perfectly.

Applications

The facial biometrics application is extremely useful and as such finds application in a variety of fields. Most of these are related with the security issues. The police department uses it, private security organizations and casinos too besides the forensics and other related departments. A person who has been flagged gets recognized, this sets off an alarm so that those who are involved get to know about it. Casinos can nab defaulters and those with a history of bad debt instantly.

Forensics and police can find offenders and criminals using this valuable software system.

Changes through years

While this specialized recognition software is not yet fool proof, over the years it has undergone a massive change. Until now only a 2-D image could be captured. The downside of this was that a person needed to sit in a way so as to directly face the camera. This was not always possible. After all, lawbreakers simply cannot be expected to willingly show their faces for everybody to recognize. Recently however 3-D images have started coming into play promising a higher percentage of accuracy at all levels.

It is said that the 3-D image is going to catch those features in the face of a person which does not change through the years. Some of these include curves of nose, eye socket and chin. It is being touted as a revolution of sorts. This is because it is being claimed that the 3-D imaging processes can even recognize a person shrouded in total darkness.

Some limitations

Even the best system may not be 100% accurate. Same is the case with this recognition software. There are certain factors which may come in the way of the recognition of a face.

Eyeglass glares

Sunglasses

Obstruction of face due to presence of long hair

Resolution problem when the picture has been taken from afar

Overexposure or under exposure of a face due to lighting

Before this system can be considered full proof there is much still needed to be done. Even then the facial biometrics software is making the job easier for the implements of law around the world.
