MARUTI PLANNING 800-CC DIESEL

Expected to produce 40 PS of power, offer fuel efficiency of 30 kpl IT HAS BEEN LEARNT . from reliable sources that Maruti, along with Suzuki, are busy developing an 800-cc diesel engine in Japan that would produce close to 40 PS of peak power and deliver anything between 25 and 30 km to a litre. The engine will be a two-cylinder one and will probably power the Alto in the Indian market when it comes into production.

Currently there is no car in the smallest car segment that comes with a diesel option, though we have heard that Tara Nano will come with a diesel option too.

The 800-cc diesel engine will definitely change the game for Maruti Suzuki, who already hold the maximum share in the Indian car market.

EICHER AND POLARIS JOIN HANDS

Limited, big players in the Indian automobile industry, have recently signed a strategic joint venture agreement with US-based Polaris Industries Inc, who are recognised leaders in the power sport industry, to set up a greenfield project in the automotive sector. This joint venture company will have a 50- 50 partnership between the two aforementioned companies and will design, develop, manufacture and sell a full new range of personal vehicles suitable for India and other emerging markets.

The manufacturing facility will be located in India, though the exact location is yet to be decided upon. Production is expected to get under way in 2015. Over a three-year period the overall investment in this joint venture company will to the tune of approximately Rs 250 crore.

Currently Eicher are present in the commercial vehicle and motorcycle segments. Following this collaboration they will be able to enter into a new vehicle segment. Let us wait and watch what new products this JV brings for the Indian customers.

GM PLAN A LOT FOR INDIA

A premium hatch, a new sedan, MPV and quick facelifts

THE FIRST PRODUCTS TO APPEAR in the Indian market from the GM-Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAle) joint venture are the newly developed Sail, the nextgeneration Chevrolet U-VA, in hatchback and sedan options. The Sail will be powered by the i.z-litre petrol motor, currently working under the hood of its smaller sibling, the Beat.

This will ensure that the premium hatchback gets an excise duty benefit and thus can be priced competitively. The Sail aims to take on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift, Honda Jazz and H yundai i20. It will be interesting to see if the Sail is offered with the FIAT-sourced r.j-litre multi-jet diesel engine also.

We had a look at it at the Auto Expo 2012.

The new Sail has a conservative design, but is not a bad looking car in any way. Going by the spy pictures sent to us by Chanchal Arora, it has a strong shoulder-line, large Ritz-like taillights and it would probably have a wide front grille following the company's new design language. However, it misses the radical lines of the Beat.

The beige and black interior also looks better than that of the U -VA. The company plans to launch an entry-level sedan based on the Sail platform later, which might carry forward the engines from the now discontinued Aveo series.

These new cars have been developed at GM-SAIC's Pan-Asia Technical Automotive Centre (PATAe) in Shanghai and are being fine-tuned by the local R&D centre for India. Chevrolet plan to launch the Sail hatchback by the end of this month at a price of about Rs 55 lakh. The sedan version will arrive a little later and it will be pitted against the Toyota Etios, Maruti Suzuki DZire and Tata Manza. It will be priced from Rs 71akh upwards.

The other product to make its way to India from the GM-SAIC stable is an all-new MPV, the Enjoy. Adding to the long list of seven-seaters headed for India, this one is essentially a Wuling CN-lOO from GM-SAIC's Chinese line-up carrying the Chevrolet badge.

However, the MPV has been given the final touches by GM's Bengaluru styling studio and it has now been toned down to suit Indian tastes. Unlike the Chevrolet family design, the Enjoy does not sport a split front grille, but the way it merges with the stretched headlights makes it quite appealing.

The Enjoy interior is expected to be beige in colour and is expected to be much more spacious than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga's, Its flexible and comfortable second- and third-row seats can be folded down or removed altogether, if need be. We are sure that the top-of-the-line variant will also feature smart alloy wheels.

Under the Enjoy's bonnet will be a 96-PS, r.a-litre petrol motor, while the diesel version is expected to be rear-wheel driven, powered by FIAT's upgraded r.j-litre multi-jet engine with a fixed-geometry turbocharger (FGT).

The Enjoy will be priced similar to the Ertiga, berween Rs 7 and 10 lakh, but would offer a lot more practicality and space. Expect it at your nearest Chevrolet dealership by September. Finally, the company is also planning to give its current small cars, the Spark and Beat, a mid-life facelift in the next couple of months.

NISSAN'S 19 STUDENT BRAND MANAGI

Prestigious fashion and trade event now in its second

NISSAN, THE WELL-KNOWN Japanese company, started the Nissan Student Brand Managers (NSBM) project a few years ago. The third season of the NSBM programme attracted a whopping 2>467 registrations from 590 colleges across 25 Indian cities and, finally, only 19 of them were selected for the job. This year the programme received an overwhelming response from all centres - Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

The entries were judged on several parameters, including uniqueness of the idea, relevance to the automobile industry, clarity in communication of ideas, innovative thinking and feasibility while executing the ideas. The range of activities for the NSBMs this year will vary from creating unique events of their own to arousing curiosity about the Nissan brand among the student community. Congratulations to all the 19 student brand managers of Nissan.
