subject: Tri Hita Karana As Balinese Life-balance Concept [print this page]

An ancient Balinese concept, Tri Hita Karana originated from a Sanskrit term that means the three causes of happiness: Tri means three; Hita means happiness; and Karana means causes.

Literally means three paths to peacefulness and prosperity, Tri Hita Karana is essentially a philosophy that focuses on the importance of maintaining harmony in this world, maintaining harmonious relationships with God, fellow human beings and the environment.

Having a significant meaning in the culture of Bali, Tri Hita Karana sums up the three fundamental relationships in life that really matter, namely Parahyangan which is basically the relationship between man with the only God that created the holy knowledge to the human being that must compulsorily be followed, Pawongan which is the relationship of human being with other human being, and Palemahan which is the relationship between man and with the environment and other creatures.

One of the three concepts related to the god, Parhyangan demands man to keep the harmony and balance with god. It believed that harmony is not only for human being but also for all creatures, the earth, the heaven, God, the universe included animals and plants.

Pawongan emphasized how to keep good relations with others. In Bali Culture, harmony can be shown through sincere tolerance and respects for the one we know as well as for the ones we do not know. Also, harmony can be shown by conducting three good things like to think the good thing, to speak the good thing and to conduct the good thing.

Palemahan believes that the source of happiness is laid on the harmony between human being with universe, the earth, the sky, and with other creatures. In Bali Culture, this harmony is thought, spoken and acted through its people's daily activities.

The balance between all these elements has to be maintained if tranquility is to be attained.

This harmony among the 3 significant fundamental relationships in life is believed to generate a maximum benefit to human spiritual, mentality and physical well being.

These three main elements are supposed to bring about peace and a sense of calm in order to maintain a balance in life.

Also, this triad of elements also essentially signifies a cosmological unit that is capable of being employed as a locally and culturally based environmental management unit.

Tri Hita Karana implies the concept of stability, of which has long been at the heart of Balinese philosophy and daily practice, symbolizing the delicate balance between the physical and spiritual worlds.

These ancient Balinese concepts nowadays have become the point of the hotel, restaurant, Bali villas resort and other building assessment in the world.

Bali luxury villas guests and tourists can see these three elements expressed in every form of art in the country and also during planning to construct buildings.

Bali has Balinese traditional architecture that is not only monumental, but also has the aspect philosophies and religions, where buildings such as hotels and some of the many private villas in Bali are constructed with the 3 concepts in mind. Because of this, all hotels and luxury villas in Bali have been well-known to provide its guest with that sense of calm unlike hotels or villas in any other part of the world.
