subject: What Kind Of Clothing Should You Wear When Cycling? [print this page]

Cycling can be a very enjoyable pastime and is a well-loved hobby for many people, but if you want to make sure that you are able to enjoy cycling properly you should always wear the right kind of bike clothing. A lot of this clothing is worn for safety's sake, although much of it will also help to keep you comfortable when on your bike.

There is a lot of different bike clothing available out there, so much so that it can be difficult to know exactly what you need to wear for different cycling styles. The exact type of cycling clothing that you wear will ultimately depend on what kind of bike you ride, as you may need different levels of safety.

If you ride a bike just to get from A to B, rather than as an extreme riding hobby, you will only need some basic cycling clothing. This can include a bike helmet, which can protect your head should you be involved in a cycling accident, as well as some kind of hi-vis clothing that will make you stand out when cycling at night. It can be very difficult for other drivers and even cyclists on the road to spot those not wearing hi-vis clothing at night, so by wearing it you will be helping to keep both yourself and others on the road safe. You can buy hi-vis jackets, vests, over trousers and more. If you don't want to wear something like this, you should make sure that you use reflective slickers or gloves instead.

You will also need some proper cycling gloves that can keep your hands warm while also providing additional grip, and a pair of cycling shoes are recommended. You should never wear inappropriate footwear when cycling - flip flops won't help to protect your feet in the event of an accident!

Those that enjoy more extreme cycling, such as BMX or mountain biking, will need to wear different cycling clothing. It is usually recommended that these cyclists wear some kind of body armour, often elbow, knee and shin guards as these are the most commonly injured part of the body when cycling. A helmet is a must when participating in extreme cycling, and full-face helmets should be worn for especially extreme tracks. A lot of dirt jumpers also choose to wear cycling masks, which can help to stop dust particles from limiting their breathing.

You should make sure to wear lightweight clothing that won't weigh you down when cycling, although the clothes you wear also need to be protective to prevent injury should you fall from your bike.
