subject: Remove Solids From Chemicals With Filter Press Machines [print this page] Filter Press is an industrial machine which is used to separate solids from liquids. Filter Press Machines are widely used in many industries like food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries to make products from slurries. In chemistry, Slurries are the fluid mixture of solid particles and liquid that can be pumped if not too thick. Filter Presses are used to separate these solid particles so that the useful liquid part of the mixture can be further processed. Filter Press Machines are also called Chamber Filter Press or Membrane Filter Press.
How Filter Press Machines Remove Solid From Chemicals?
In chemical Industry, Filter Presses are widely used to dewater the sludge. The basic components of the Filter Press Machine are feed hopper, chamber plates, filtering clothes, belts, rollers, and receiving container. The process of filtration involves following steps:
First, through the feed hopper sludge is delivered to be processed further.
A hydraulic unit operates the cylinder powered by air which is used to control the pressure of the feeding pump and put pressure to squeeze the filter plates.
The filter plate pack comprises of many filter plates. With these filter plates filter clothes are attached. These filter plates form chambers for the collection of solid. Sludge is pumped into the chambers.
Liquid then passes through the filter clothes and exits through the filtrate ports of the plates.
The solid (filter cake) collects on the filter media (filter cloth).
When the chamber is full, the stack of plates is opened, filter cake is removed and plates are then located to their original place and filtration process is repeated.
There are several types of Filter Presses like Automatic Filter Press, Manual Filter Press, hydraulic Filter Press and Membrane Filter Press. Filter Press Machines are made of durable material like stainless steel or cast iron. Corrosion resistant material is used to manufacture Filter Press Machines as they have to process moist chemicals and sludge.
