subject: How To Shop For Cosmetics And Skin Care Products [print this page]

Cosmetics and skin care products take up a large part of a woman's shopping time due to a number of reasons. First, because there are many types of products and brands for you to choose from. Magazine and television advertisements are all competing for your attention. When you hit the personal care products section of the mall, there is no shortage of different samples and testers to look at, smell, and try. If you have other things to shop for, you cannot afford to spend all your time checking out lash conditioners, make-up, perfumes, and the like. Here are some tips that will help you shop smart for personal care products:

Timing is Essential

Finding the best products requires your undivided attention so try to do your shopping during the opening hours and mid-afternoon on a Monday, when most of your competition, aka other women, are in the office. If it is not possible to hit the mall on a Monday, try going on a Tuesday or Wednesday, when the crowds are still not in a shopping mood. If your only free time is during the weekend, go as soon as the mall is open.

Do Not be Afraid to Ask the Right Questions

Though you may consider yourself a beauty product expert, it is always a good idea to ask sales representatives about the products on display. While some of them will tell you what you want to hear (which is not exactly the truth) just so will go make a purchase, many of them are there to offer you genuine assistance. Sales representatives are trained to handle certain skin testing devices so they can provide you with personalized advice. Do not be afraid make queries about the safety of a certain product, how much and how often you need to use it, and when you can expect some improvements or results. Know about return policies. You should be able to return unopened and unused products within 30 days as long as you present the receipt.

Ask for Samples or Use a Tester

After getting the answers to your questions, ask if you can bring home some samples. If there are no prepackaged samples, use the communal tester. Apply the product you want to test on your inner forearm because the thickness of your skin in that area is similar to that of your face.

The Products are for You, Not the Bathroom

Do not buy products just because you like the packaging and would look good when displayed in the bathroom. Skin-friendly substances like antioxidants and vitamins need to be protected from air and light so they can retain their potency and stability. Glass bottles with air-less pumps are among the best types of packaging while plastic bottles and jars are the worst.

Think about What You Need Before Shopping

Are you using all of the products on your bathroom counter? Instead of stocking up on products, buy only what you need. When the sun is up, go for products that contain moisturizers and sunscreen. Do some research before going to the mall. After you have mastered the art of shopping for cosmetics in the mall, it will be easier for to buy personal and skin care products online because you already have an idea on what to look for.
