Ever since the association of CCSVI (chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency) and multiple sclerosis (a demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system) was made concrete by an Italian physician, who showed that over 9/10ths of the patients who have MS (multiple sclerosis) also have CCSVI as an associated pathology, it raised questions of whether CCSVI was a cause of MS or was it the corollary that was true. But whatever be the evolution of the disease, physicians accepted that both these conditions be treated together to see an optimal improvement in the patient condition.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation, demyelination (loss of myelin sheath of the nerves), gliosis (scarring), and neuronal loss; the course of this disease can be relapsing-remitting or progressive. Lesions of MS typically occur at different times and in different locations (i.e., disseminated in time and space). Though there is extensive research over the causation of MS, the key etiologic factor that would complete the puzzle of the causation of this strange, yet debilitating disease remains to elude scientists and researchers.

The MS symptoms vary widely and range from loss of sensations (most common complaint), visual complaints (loss of visual detail, reduction in visual field), weakness (loss of muscle strength, dexterity, reflexes), altered sensations, double vision, and rarely even bladder disturbances.

Other symptoms of ms, which are seen, include vertigo; disturbances in gait (ataxia), Lhermitte's positive (a clinical sign of irritation of meninges, the tissue that covers the brain and the spinal cord) and very rarely even frank pain can be a symptom of MS. The main pathophysiology of the disease is the intermittent episodes of nerve demyelination which is mediated by the same cells which offer the body the immunity that it naturally has. Think of the nerves like insulated wires which crisscross all around the brain. In MS, the white cells of the body react against the insulation of the nerves and degrade them, short circuiting the normal pathways in the brain. When the wires that transmit the information to the different parts of the brain malfunction, obviously enough there is a misinterpretation of the information that is being sent to the brain, which leads to all of the symptoms of Ms.

Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, commonly known by its acronym CCSVI is another common pathology that was found to be almost always associated with MS. The association between the two was made concrete by an Italian physician Dr. Paolo Zamboni, raising questions of a new theory of the causation of MS. Although the initial theories of MS had a component of perivenular thickening and infiltration by white blood cells, this was previously believed to be a consequence of the defective formation of the blood brain barrier. But the proof of this association changed the views on the condition.

A few of the CCSVI symptoms can be:

>>Fatigue, increasing as the day progresses

>>Headaches when sleeping face up

>>Progressive loss of voluntary control over bladder and bowel movements.

>>Reduction in motor and sensory acuity

>>Memory deficiency

Therefore, from the lists above we can see that MS and CCSVI symptoms have overlapping symptoms, and therefore more often than not the ms symptoms can indicate a co-existing CCSVI in the person.
