subject: Led Backlit Technology Gives Improved Picture Quality [print this page] Eventually nearly everything has to be replaced and televisions are one of those things. If your old television just is not producing the quality picture that you want, it may be time to consider purchasing a new LED backlit TV. Buying a new television will allow you to give up that bothersome converter box since all new televisions are digital ready.
Early models LCD TVs use fluorescent tubes for backlighting. Since these tubes are on whenever the television is on, it is difficult for them to show deep black colors that are necessary for nice sharp pictures. Even if the television was trying to project a dark black color, the light can leak onto the screen. The colors that can be shown with a fluorescent lighting can be limited due to the fact that it doesn't contain all the rainbow colors. This may be why photographs shot with fluorescent lighting can be of poor quality. Fluorescent lighting can limits the colors shown on a TV, while LED lighting can offer a higher range of colors.
An LCD TV can have two different ways to have LED lighting. One way is called an edge lit lighting and it is when the LED lighting is set along the edges of the LED TV. Another way for the lighting to be set up is from the back and this is called a backlit LED TV. If you are concerned about energy consumption, both of these LED technologies use less energy than a fluorescent tube LCD or a plasma screen. If you want an ultra thin technology in your television and pay less, then you would probably choose the edge lit LED screen.
If you are willing to pay more and the thickness of 1 1/2 or 2 inches does not matter to you, then the back lit LED TV will give you the better viewing experience. A block of lights are turned off to makes the screen sharper when a black segment is needed. The problem is that the technology to turn off single lamp is expensive so the television will turn off a block of lights so that some of the adjacent colors may not appear to be as bright as they should be.
As this technology is newer, you can pay up to two times as much for an LED backlit LCD TV as you would for a similar size LCD or plasma TV. Before purchasing, you should spend some time viewing all three sets to see which better fits your viewing desires. Make sure that you compare the different TVs at the store and then also online for the best price. Ultimately, you will decide which LED TV set will satisfy your viewing pleasure for the price.
