subject: Tips For Selling A Home What Is The Best Color? [print this page]

A concept that applies to the real estate market would be love at first sight. So, what is the best house color to sell your home to a love struck buyer?

What Is the Best Color For Selling A Home?

Do you make an effort to snazzy yourself up when you go to social events? The answer would be yes. The reason for this is because a key factor in forming relationships is attraction and the same applies to your house. Making your house look good for the dates with potential buyers is a must when you put it on the market. The color of your house can make all the difference.

First of all, there is no right answer to the best color. The makeup of your home and the surrounding landscape is where the decision would depend on. Here are some of the issues we can look at.

Make sure that whatever color you choose doesn't clash with the other homes in the neighborhood. With an otherwise appropriate color, your house could end up being an eye-sore.

Check the Roof. What color is the roof on your home? The truth is, off-whites would probably be the best choice if it is a red tiled roof. You shouldn't use dark green then. If you are not going to invest money in a new roof, then make sure that the paint color doesn't clash with it.

What about the Highlights? If you need to emphasize a particular part of your house, then what you can do is use light colored paint around it to draw attention.

Hiding it. Conversely, if there are any mundane parts of the house, then you can draw attention away from them by using darker colors.

Keep in mind that the color you choose will have a washed out appearance on large flat surfaces such as the side of a garage.

It's now time to get to the fun part. Make a preliminary list of colors and buy small cans of each color after you have considered the above issues. In a private area of the house, start applying samples strokes a couple feet long and a foot or so wide. Try to paint examples in both shaded areas and those exposed to the sun.

Try not to judge the results of your experiments immediately. Before you start comparing, wait for a few hours for the paint to dry. Taking on a very different appearance than wet paint is dry paint.

When the paint is dry, you can then take a long look at each sample. The colors looking much different that you thought they would is what you will typically find. You may find that something a little different would be best or you may find that one color is perfect. Either way, what you have come up with is the best house color to sell your home.
