subject: Jetty Java Developers Guide To New Web Server Technology [print this page]

Jetty, an Open source application server from Java has been the talk of the Developers community these days. As a source servlet container, Jetty is known the most. This Java Technology had been made as set of JAR files which you can embed in your current Java code as an Object. Such functionality widen the feasibility for web applications and servlets.

Jetty is progressing towards getting deployed on 300000 public web servers and client companies. The leading and one of the well know Java application server in Java Developers community is Apache Tomcat has the count near about 400000. Currently Yahoo projects like Hadoop Cluster and Zimbra along with Google AppEngine are powered by Jetty.

Jetty is increasingly coming into use with major technology partners who lead and support it to come up with more functionality. It has been included by Eclipse IDE and OSGi framework same is the case with Equinox.

During early 2010 release of Jetty 8.0 has been planned by Java developers, and for that WebTide has already been working on it to increase its overall performance. Currently version 7.0 is there which has no performance issues but as technology always demand more further research and development for more advanced deployment is being carried out.

Jetty basically developed to act as HTTP server and Client along with javax.servlet container. It was hosted by the Eclipse foundation which further contains it into its IDE. Because of its light weight and small size it is pretty much compatible for getting embedded with Java applications. This web server technology is open source and also the dual licensed under the Apache Licence 2.0.
