subject: Postural Tachycardia Syndrome [print this page] Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PTS) is a group of disorders where Orthostatic Intolerance (OI) is the primary symptom. This is a condition in which the volume of blood returning to the heart is much reduced when a person stands up from a lying position. Apart from OI the other major symptoms of PTS are giddiness, fainting, heaviness of head, etc. mostly these symptoms are accompanied by rapid heartbeat of about 30 beats higher than the normal heart beat rate within a minute that is it exceeds even 120 beats per minute within 10 minutes of rising up from the lying down position. Mostly this problem will be instantly reduced by again lying down.
The PTS is occurring with the individuals regardless of age and sex but mostly it appears in the age groups between 15 to 50 years. Mostly the persons getting affected with PTS are reporting that they are getting the attacks mostly before their menstrual cycles, after the pregnancy, after any major surgery, immediately after any severe trauma, during viral illness, etc. Most of the PTS patients felt difficulty with their regular works mainly strenuous activities, computer works, exercises and any fitness activities as they are getting dizziness and spells of fainting during such tasks.
Till now the cause of PTS or postural tachycardia syndrome is not clear and thus it is an unknown etiological disease. The researchers are still under observing what may be the cause for the reduced blood returns to the heart that causing PTS or why the heart suddenly beats very fast than normal in PTS. Till now there are certain mechanisms and theories available for explaining the cause of PTS. Some of them are,
Neuropathic PTS because of Peripheral denervation
Hyper adrenergic PTS because of paroxysmal or sustained over activity of the sympathetic nervous system
Nervous deconditioning PTS, etc
The main treatment procedures involved for treating the POTS mainly aims to correct the low blood volume and low blood return to the heart by regulating the circulatory system. Several drugs are available for this but all works for a short span of time whereas for the long course of treatment and for permanent cure no single treatment or medicine is available now effectively. Apart from drug therapy certain alternate methods are helping a lot like water drinking, certain exercise programs, etc.
In all postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome can lead to major problem if not cared at the right time. Just visit your physician and know the problem so that you can get it treated fast and easy.
