subject: Traits Of A Good Project Manager [print this page]

A good project manager is integral to the success of any project. They make sure that team members are working to their potential and that objectives are achieved. Good project managers also manage expectations and make sure that the team is producing top-notch work. But what exactly makes a good project manager effective? Here are some of the essential traits of good project managers:

Levelheadedness

The members of your team will tend to be deeply influenced by how leaders act, especially in high pressure situations. A good project manager is able to navigate through even the most troubling times and set an example for other members of the team. For this reason, it is important that project managers not get frazzled in times of adversity and that they remain diligent through both the good times as well as the bad. Remember, the project manager in many ways is the light that other team members follow. If the project manager is at ease, then the rest of the team will follow suit.

Execution

Every Project manager will be judged by his or her ability to deliver. A good Project Manager is able to understand the objectives of each project and execute. This means that they see every task through to the end and make sure that it is accomplished properly. It also means that the project manager wont get hung up on minor details or waste time complaining, but will make sure that every team member has their eyes fixed firmly on the task at hand. This is one of the most important traits of a good project manager because without it, the other attributes simply dont matter.

Responsibility

An effective leader takes responsibility for the results of the team. They dont point the finger or waste precious time blaming others or circumstances for why things didnt get done. They understand what is at stake, and hold themselves accountable for not reaching expectations. Similarly, they hold team members accountable for not meeting their responsibilities and achieving the desired results. A responsible project manager is conscientious and makes sure, at every part of the project, that the needed tasks are getting done.

Communication

A leaders ability to command his or her team starts and ends with communication. Effective communication is needed for team members to understand what needs to be done and how it should be executed. More importantly, communication is the most effective tool a leader has to inspire his or her team and keep morale up. Conversely, it is also needed for team members to speak to leaders and let them know what problems may arise. A good project manager understands that in order to truly succeed as a team, everyone must be on the same page and have a common understanding about the tasks at hand.
