subject: School: A Place Where Students Learn Socialization [print this page]

It would be wrong to say that students go to school only to study. When we talk about various dimensions of education, social dimension is one of the most important dimensions. If it was only to study that students go to school, then home schooling would have been one of the most popular forms of education, atleast among the rich. However, it is not the case. Even though home schooling is regarded as one of the alterate forms of education, it is not as widespread in India as schooling is. Socialization is one of the most important factors behind this phenomenon.

School is a place where students come across various people who are different from one another in terms of their behaviour, nature, attitude, aptitude, class and religion.

India would not remain a secular country, if schools stop admitting children from different religions.. Students would not learn to respect other peoples religion, if they only read it in books that all religions are equal in the eyes of law, and do not interact with people from different religion. Even though students do not always discuss religion, yet talking to people from all religions make them accept others beliefs by observing sameness in them.

When students go to school, they automatically learn to deal with people who are different from them in nature and behaviour. Even though, they may befriend only those whom they like, yet they do not always fight with people who are unlike them and learn how to keep relations which may be termed as hello, how are you relations.

This is one of the important factors of socialization that they later use even outside their schools and keep good relations with people by ritualized or semi-ritualized conversation like saying hi or hello, wishing good day, asking how they are and their family and talking to one another on safe topics like weather, favourite games, latest and breaking news, etc.

Thus, we can say that school is an important place where students learn the lessons of socialization in the early stages of their life.
