This is an in-depth analysis on the differences between old and new GRE patterns which can be of utmost benefit to the students aspiring to make it to very good universities and their future is certainly dependent on their GRE scores.

Each and every area where changes were made will be dealt in specific and in detail. Here they are:

Methodology

Old GRE pattern:

The old pattern was predominantly based on the answers provided by the test takers. The difficulty of the questions rose gradually based on the continuum of right answers by the students.

Questions once answered and froze were not used to be touched again and change the answers.

Manual calculations used to be the only way to solve quantitative questions.

New GRE pattern

The flexibility to change the answers of already answered questions has been granted to students. That means they can go back to any skeptic question in the section to change their answer.

The biggest relief that comes to students is the permission to use calculator and access to an on-screen calculator provided by ETS. A lot of time can be saved with this change.

Time duration of the Test

Old GRE Pattern

The test in the old pattern used to last for 3 hours.

New GRE pattern

The new and revised pattern of examination lasts for a time of approximately 3 hour 45 minutes.

Scoring pattern

Old GRE pattern

Each question used to be measured in the multiples of 10 based on the difficulty such as 10, 20, 30 etc and the total denomination of each module used to range between 200-800 marks.

New GRE Pattern

It is made more simple and easier for evaluation and each question is measured in 1 point multiples like 1, 2, 3 etc and each module is between the range 130-170.

Verbal Module

Old GRE Pattern

There used to be 4 types of areas on which questions were framed. They are Analogies, Antonyms, Sentence Completions and Reading Comprehension.

New GRE Pattern

Changes were brought out in the verbal module and now the new GRE pattern in verbal module consists of reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence.

Quantitative Module

Old GRE pattern

The old GRE pattern used to consist of two types of question in quantitative module. They are Multiple Choice Quantitative Comparison and Multiple Choice Problem Solving.

New GRE pattern

As aforementioned, a lot of prominence has been added in the new GRE pattern to the quantitative module. Unlike the old pattern which had 2 types of questions, this pattern has 4 types of questions. They are One answerable Multiple Choice, One or more answerable Multiple Choice, Filling the blank answers, and Quantitative Comparative questions.

Writing Module

This section remains unchanged from the old GRE pattern as it included One Argument Essay and One Issue Essay in the old pattern and so is it the same in the new pattern as well.
