subject: Benefits Of Drug Rehab Centers [print this page]

Drug rehab centers save livesDrug rehab centers save lives. They provide places of healing, treatment, discovery and fresh starts. Getting clean and sober and finding health, peace and renewed happiness are powerful benefits of seeking drug treatment.

No two treatment centers are exactly the same, but many are based on common treatment protocols and philosophies. The early stages of treatment may consist of detoxification. Programs may adhere to accepted detox protocols, should closely monitor the patients physical functioning and should be fully staffed with nurses and doctors.

As treatment in rehab progresses, patients will participate in a variety of activities, which may include: individual counseling, family counseling, group counseling, drug and alcohol seminars, life skills classes, communication skills classes, recreational activities, and either Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Most addiction treatment is based on the 12-Step philosophy. The 12-Step philosophy suggests that an addict is powerless over his or her addiction. Surrendering to this idea allows the addict to claim the power to change his or her life. With surrender comes a sense of relief, and the ensuing change of mindset helps in adopting new behaviors and accepting support.

The 12-step philosophy has a long history and has helped millions of men and women conquer drug and alcohol abuse. Research has shown that combining intensive therapy with the 12-step program provides the best chance at lasting recovery from addiction. The 12 Steps introduce critical concepts that are vital to recovery, including powerlessness, humility, acceptance, responsibility and a connection with a higher power.

A typical day at drug rehab may include an early start with breakfast, meditation and a daily process group. The morning may consist of various recovery lectures and therapy sessions. Lunch is usually followed by individual, group and/or family therapy and may include some form of creative therapy as well. Creative therapies can include art therapy, equine therapy, etc. Specialty groups for co-occurring disorders, coping skills, life skills, gender-specific groups may be part of the daily offerings as well.

During free time, patients can engage in recreational activities like basketball, volleyball, journaling, working on art projects whatever the program has to offer. Evening usually involves a 12-Step meeting, a structured activity or movie and time for reflection before bedtime. Weekends are a time for family and friends to visit, or for off-site family visits for patients who have earned them.

A large part of the rehab and treatment process includes learning how to have fun again without using drugs or alcohol. Discovering new, healthy and productive ways to spend time is an extremely valuable piece of the recovery process.

Seeking treatment for drug addiction is not an easy thing to do. There are many Drug Rehab Centers to choose from, each of which can provide you with the tools you need to obtain and maintain sobriety. These centers aim to restore individuals to healthier, happier and more productive lives, free from destructive behavior and dependence on drugs.
