subject: Spain Holiday Rentals To Visit The Mountainous Castellon De La Plana [print this page] Castellon de la Plana is the capital of one of the most mountainous regions in Spain not too far from your SPAIN HOLIDAY RENTALS. The coastline like all the beaches along the coast on the east of the Spanish mainland is mixed with sandy and rocky beaches. Castellon de la Plana is a forward moving town with broad, modern avenues, narrow streets and plazas perfectly mixing its history with modern road planning and creating a unique atmosphere. A walk around town is a pleasant experience with many great surprises waiting for you, as beautiful modernist buildings and the modern shops blend in perfectly with shady parks and Gothic and Renaissance monuments.
The deep cultural roots of the people of Castellon de la Plana celebrate the town's history with regular fiestas and annual events. The town was once part of a local hill but it was moved onto the plains, hence the addition to its name of "de la Plana". The port, where you can regularly see large amounts of exports being shipped out, accounts for the town's most substantial income with the economy based around ceramic tiles, agriculture and, to a lesser degree, tourism. The beaches locally all have the usual sports and there are plenty of pleasant walks nearby too; head inland for other activities such as horse trekking, another popular pastime for many tourists.
Like a lot of towns and villages in the Iberian Peninsula, the town can trace its history back to the Pleistocene era 25,000 years ago. There are caves with cave paintings that have been discovered, some of which are now listed with UNESCO as part of the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin. Iberians settlers, Romans and the Moors have all had settlements in the region; while the original village was built on the nearby hilltop, it was after the reconquest that the whole settlement was transported and renamed.
When you are in town be sure to look up more information at the town museum. The Museum of Fine Arts, as it is called in Spanish the Museo de Bellas Artes, lies inside an 18th century building built for a nobleman of the era in Caballeros street. The museum was inaugurated in 1980. The exhibits are grouped into their different themes. The archaeological exhibits include pieces bought in from the region from the Palaeolithic era through to the Middle Ages. The ceramics section contains a thousand outstanding pieces from workshops and factories of the local towns like Onda, Ribesalbes and Alcora with additional contributions from Manises and further afield. The painting section is made up of works by artists including Ribera, Ribalta, Romero de Torres, Rodrigo de Osona, Sorolla, Mongrell, Puig Roda and Porcar. Additional sculptures by Adsuara, Viciano, Gandarias, Benlliure and Vicent are also displayed.
The El Museo Etnologico de la Diputacion is the provincial ethnological museum which was inaugurated in 1983; it preserves traditional implements, work clothes and tools used by craftsmen, blacksmiths, rope makers, shoemakers and weavers from the region. El Museo Municipal Etnologico del Fadrell is set amongst orange groves which surround the town in an annex of the Hermitage of St Jaume del Fadrell. The building itself is a pretty 18th century chapel. The museum has the largest collection of rural and folklore exhibits from the province and also a scale model of the town from its medieval roots, making a great place to tour on your SPAIN HOLIDAY RENTALS.
