subject: Getting To Know Trees [print this page]

But what else can you tell about the tree- how is its health? How old is it? How has it been cared for? If you are fortunate enough to have trees in your yard or garden it pays to know something about them in order to keep them happy and healthy.

First of all, if you dont know what kind of tree you are looking at, try to identify it noting a few of the general features. What type is it: deciduous or evergreen? What do the leaves look like? The bark? Does it have fruit? What is its form, or overall growth pattern-is it the shape of a pyramid, a cone, a column or something more funky like an umbrella or a fireworks display?

The first thing to determine is its life stage. Is it a juvenile, mature, or an ancient tree? A trees architecture forms an accurate record of its past and gives each tree its own unique character for better or worse. Thats because trees undergo dynamic changes all their lives as they respond to the pressures in the world around them.

In a man-made landscape, trees must respond to conditions that can be far more challenging than anything nature has to offer. We transplant trees, sometimes in completely unsuitable places, drastically prune them, and try to grow lawns under them. Street and urban trees face some of the toughest tests: road salt, limited space for roots and branches, compacted soils, and harsh reflected light and heat.

Despite all the challenges that trees encounter there is much you can do to make life easier for them. By using an experienced and qualified tree service you can get detailed guidance for the best pruning practices for juvenile, mature, and veteran trees; and learn how proper watering, mulching, and pruning help keep trees healthy. They can also recognize hazardous conditions and the best ways to prevent or remedy them.

Just as a good doctor cares for each patient a little differently depending on the patients age, condition, and medical history, so should we treat our trees.
