subject: Christmas Loneliness Advice And Solutions [print this page]

In a perfect world, we would all be fortunate enough to have family and friends to spend Christmas with, and Christmas loneliness is something that we wouldn't have to be concerned about. However, the world is far from perfect as we all know, and in spite of our best laid plans, some of us may have to deal with holiday loneliness on our own after all.

Christmas loneliness is a very real concern for a growing number of people, because of the increasing tendency to live independently of one another. While living away from home can be a good thing in terms of maintaining your independence, all that freedom is likely to result in some payback come Christmas time. You may have enjoyed living in solitude during the rest of the year, but you probably won't appreciate being faced with the prospect of Christmas loneliness when the holiday season comes around.

The obvious solution to avoiding loneliness at Christmas is going back to your hometown where your family still lives. There is something about Christmas that makes people yearn for the nest and you will probably want to do the same thing. Back home is where you can enjoy the company of old friends and family, and there are few better ways to spend the holidays than in the presence of people whom you have known all your life. Sure, there is something to be said about meeting new people and living in a frenzy of social activity throughout the year. But come Christmas time, you will probably appreciate being with your friends and family more.

In some cases, people have no choice in the matter and will simply have to spend the holidays away from their ones. Although distressing, this situation doesn't have to be all that bad, and there are many things you can do to ease the pain of holiday loneliness. Many travel services and resorts around the world offer great deals on vacation packages in the days leading up to Christmas, and you can take this opportunity to enjoy the vacation you have always dreamed of at a much reduced rate. While the thought of spending the holidays in a resort all by yourself may not seem all that appealing, there are likely to be new people you can meet there who are in the same situation. In any case, it definitely beats staying home alone and trying to beat Christmas loneliness in a drab apartment!

In the worse case scenario, and if you find that you have no one to spend the homeowners with and you can't afford to go on a vacation, you still have a number of options left to consider. You can use the time to reflect on your life and pans for the future, and to out your affairs into order. Christmas is also a time for renewal and rediscovery, and planning out your course of action for the coming year is certainly more productive than having to wallow in loneliness at Christmas.
