subject: Small Businesses Get Mp To Pledge Support [print this page]

Businesses from the local area and students from the Enterprise Academy at Lancaster & Morecambe College got an opportunity to question MP Eric Ollerenshaw on the government's plans to support small businesses.

Lancaster and Morecambe College partnered with the Federation of Small Businesses to bring together local businesses, business and enterprise students and Eric Ollerenshaw MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood at an event in the Coulson's restaurant on Friday 20th April.

The Meet your MP Event' was brought together by the Federation of Small Businesses as part of their Campaign for the UK's Real Life Entrepreneurs'. The FSB is the largest and most effective organisation promoting and protecting the interests of the self employed and small business owners within the UK.

The event presented an unprecedented opportunity for businesses and budding entrepreneurs to put their questions about business and enterprise to the MP. The range of questions covered everything from the availability of broadband for rural area through to intellectual property rights and competition laws. Attended by over a dozen local businesses the event also offered the chance for networking not only for the businesses but also for the students.

Gary Kelly, Senior tutor and head of the Enterprise Academy commented This is an ideal opportunity for the students not only to ask questions pertinent to them as young entrepreneurs looking to join the business community but also to start creating networks and getting to know some of the businesses who may be looking to employ them in the near future. The students have got a great deal out of this event with some even having secured opportunities for internships and work experiences with the business owners they have met today.'

The event was also significant for local businesses Jane Binnion, owner of Jane's Social Media said It was an excellent event and I was pleased to get a chance to put my questions directly to the MP'

This event is one of the many opportunities Lancaster and Morecambe College offers students throughout the year. These vary depending on the course but always aim to give students the chance to experience the world of work first hand and create networks with relevant local businesses that can give them access to work experience and employment.
