subject: Creative Ways Of Coping With Loneliness [print this page]

Loneliness is something that we all want to avoid as much as possible, but it isn't always easy to steer clear of its path. Even if you are involved in a thoroughly happy and fulfilling relationship, loneliness is bound to make an appearance at some point. You and your partner may have to part ways temporarily, or the relationship may come to a sudden end. Hopefully this won't have to happen to you, but it would still be a good idea to learn how to cope with loneliness in a healthy and productive manner.

One thing that you will realize about loneliness is that it makes instant relationship and/or loneliness experts out of everyone. When people find out that you are lonely-or even suspect you of being lonely-be prepared to deal with loads of advice on how to cope with loneliness. As well meaning as your friends and family might be, you could end up feeling pressured at all the advice that will come your way.

The truth of the matter is that coping with loneliness is largely a personal matter, and even the most tried and prevent methods for loosening the grip of loneliness may not work for you and your particular situation. The pressure to conform to societal expectations may also cause you an undue amount of stress, and you may end up being driven even deeper into despair. In order to cope with loneliness in as stress-free a manner as possible, it might be a good idea to adopt a more creative approach.

As unlikely as it may seem, the answer to dealing with your loneliness may lie within yourself. In many people, loneliness is more a manifestation of fears and frustrations than an emotional reaction to solitude or isolation. It might be worthwhile to look deep within yourself and determine of you have any deeper seated issues that need addressing. Although the loneliness that we typically feel in the absence of companionship can be distressing, it is more worrying still when loneliness stems from discomfort in one's self. Learning to be comfortable in your own skin and living yourself (not excessively hopefully!) could be the first important step in coping with loneliness.

You may also benefit considerably from turning your attention to other people in need instead of getting mired in your own concerns. Find out of there is a local food drive that you can join in your community, or if the local little league team needs an assistant coach. Helping others is a great way to cope with loneliness, and it has the further advantage of enabling you to be of use to others.

One thing that should be mentioned at this point is that loneliness cannot always be solved by resorting to these and other typical methods. In some people, loneliness can progress to the point where it can have a severely detrimental effect on life. If you find yourself unable to cope with loneliness despite your best efforts, don't be embarrassed about seeking professional counseling.
