The Juvderm dermal filler family of products, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2006, is the next generation in hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that provide a smooth, long-lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in normal, healthy skin. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding water, and to act as a cushioning agent.

The ability of cells to produce hyaluronic acid diminishes with age, often resulting in the formation of facial wrinkles and folds as the skin loses volume. Juvderm is administered in small doses by intradermal injection directly into moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the folds running from the sides of the bottom of the nose to the outer corners of the mouth), temporarily filling and augmenting the treated area.

Juvderm is the first smooth consistency gel formulation and is clinically proven to last up to one year. Juvderm is developed using the proprietary Hylacross technology, an advanced manufacturing process that results in a malleable, smooth gel that flows easily into the skin and creates a smooth, natural look and feel. All other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers currently on the market use a granular consistency gel. These granules can be seen under 2.4 x magnifications when compared to the smooth consistency gel of the Juvderm dermal filler family of products.

To provide physicians with the flexibility to tailor each treatment to the specific needs of the patient, there are two formulations of Juvderm. Product formulations include: Juvderm Ultra, a highly cross-linked formulation for more versatility in contouring and volumizing of facial wrinkles and folds; and Juvderm Ultra Plus, a more highly cross-linked and thicker gel for volumizing and correction of deeper folds and wrinkles.

Your physician will review with you what to expect following treatment with Juvderm dermal filler. They will then send you home with details for aftercare treatment. Generally one should avoid any strenuous exercise, consumption of alcohol and extended exposure to heat or sun for at least 24 hours.

The Juvderm dermal filler family of products should only be administered by a trained and qualified health care provider. Further, it can be administered in a smooth-flowing injection, providing physicians with a high level of control for individualized, tailored facial contouring and for achieving a smooth and natural look.

In clinical studies, adverse events are usually mild to moderate in nature, did not require intervention and lasted seven days or less. The most common side effects included temporary injection site reactions including redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps and bumps and bruising.
