subject: Two Dimensional Geometry [print this page]

Geometry:Geometry:

Geometry is a part of mathematics concerned with questions of size, shape, relative position of figures, and the properties of space.

Two dimensional:

In mathematics and physics, the dimensional of a space or object is informally defined as the minimum number of coordinates needed to specify each point within it.A surface such as a plane or the surface of a cylinder or sphere has a dimension of two because two coordinates are needed to specify a point on it.

Topics Involved in Two Dimensional Geometry:

Coordinate Systems in the Plane

Plane Symmetries or Isometries

Other Transformations of the Plane

Lines

Polygons

Circles

Conics

Special Plane Curves

In this article we are going to learn about two dimensional geometry polygons.

Polygons in Two Dimensional Geometry :

Polygons in two dimensional geometry have two coordinates called as x and y coordinates. There are many types of two dimensional polygons such as ,

Triangles

Square

Parallelogram

Rhombus

Kite

Trapezoid

Rectangle

Circle

Ellipse

AX

Let us see some problems on two dimensional geometry polygons.

Problems on Two Dimensional Geometry Polygons:

Check this awesome Interval Notation Calculator - http://calculator.tutorvista.com/interval-notation-calculator.html i recently used.

1.Find the area of the triangle whose height is 5 cm and base 9 cm.

Solution:

Given Height of a triangle is 5 cm

Base of triangle is 9 cm

We know that the area of the triangle is 1/2 bh.

1/2 bh = 1/2 (9)(5)

= 1/2 45

= 45/2

= 22.5cm2

So the area of the given triangle is 22.5 cm2

Problem 2:

The area of the square is 36ft2 .Find the Perimeter of the square.

Solution:

Given that Area of the square is 36ft2.

We know that the area of the square is s2 ,Where s is a side of a square.

So s2 = 36

Taking Square root on both side,

s = 'sqrt(36)'

s = 6.

so the side of the Square is 6ft.

The perimeter of the Square is sum of the 4 sides.

We know that all the sides of the square is equal.

So Perimeter is 4s= 4(6)

= 24ft.

Answer: perimeter of square is 24 ft.
