Clinical lasers are used for a wide variety of treatments, but have seemed to find a niche in the dental industry. They can be used to reduce the inflammation and infection that can be caused because of certain dental procedures and implants. Experiments are currently in place to determine the maximum wavelength and strength that can be used on patients over a long period of time.

Scientists are still unsure regarding how these dental lasers work. There appears to be a limited effect based on the wavelength of the laser. The duration of the treatment as well as the location of the laser also seem to affect how well the LLLT affects the patients. There are a few concerns regarding how these higher wavelengths may be affecting patients, but there is no denying the overwhelming effect they have on inflammation. The only downside to this treatment is that the relief appears to be solely temporary and dependent on frequent dosage in order to provide consistent results for the patient.

The LLLT treatment is quite simple. The point of the pain is determined. This will be a lymph node, cervical nerve or responding tissue. Once the root of the discomfort is determined the low level laser therapy in dentistry can begin. The doctor will calculate the appropriate dosage based on the condition of the tissues, the stage of the infection, the pigment of the patients skin and the depth of the skin in the area. In most cases the pain treatment is given over the course of two sessions, though more may be necessary if the condition is chronic. The patient will be examined after the initial sessions to determine if more treatment is necessary.

While the research for LLLT is still in its infancy there is still much data available regarding its use. Many dentists swear by the treatment for their patients, especially when they receive extensive implant surgery. LLLT in dentistry has been researched thoroughly as a possible treatment for a variety of infections as well as painful inflammation around the gum line and elsewhere in the mouth. There are many current remedies for these conditions, including levothyroxine, but significant evidence exists which implies that LLLT is much more effective in treating these illnesses than the treatments many doctors currently depend on.
