subject: Detecting The Signs Of Loneliness In Men [print this page]

Loneliness in men is a much more common occurrence than you would think. All over the world, men have traditionally been brought up to avoid showing emotion as much as possible, which is why men and loneliness aren't often discussed in the same conversation. The fact of the matter is that men do suffer from loneliness to an equivalent degree and frequency as women. In fact, with all the stress and pressure felt by men in today's society, loneliness is becoming an increasingly commonplace occurrence.

Men and loneliness share a unique connection, and it is often manifested differently compared to loneliness in women. The factors that can cause loneliness in men are often quite different than the factors that can cause the condition in women. When feeling loneliness, men also tend to conceal their emotional state from others, unlike women who are generally more open with their feelings. This is the main reason why men and loneliness aren't often associated with one another, and also why loneliness in men isn't always easy to pinpoint.

Loneliness in men can manifest itself in many different ways. Men who are lonely may seek out the companionship of people they wouldn't normally associate with. Hiring prostitutes, taking drugs, hanging out in bars and strip clubs, and gambling are only a few of the activities that men routinely turn to when they are lonely. In some men, loneliness may drive them to do these things only on occasion, while other men suffer from loneliness to such a significant degree and for such prolonged periods that aberrant behavior becomes the norm rather than the exception.

Some men who are lonely may not exhibit any unusual behavior aside from a tendency to be alone most of the time. Solitude-whether self imposed or involuntary-is actually one of the most common causes of loneliness, and interestingly enough, also one of its most common manifestations. Although being alone for long periods of time is a possible sign of loneliness, men who are already lonely may feel that they have no choice but to seek comfort in solitude.

For people who suffer from depression to a significant degree, the loneliness of isolation may somehow seem preferable to the company of people with whom they would rather not associate. This results in a complex emotional dilemma that can be difficult to address. The logical thing to do when lonely is to seek out the company of other people, but some men are simply incapable of prolonged human contact due to certain deeply rooted mental and emotional issues.

In a cruel twist of irony, the social interaction that would normally ease the pain of loneliness results in such a degree of discomfort and aversion that people suffering from loneliness-men and women both-shy away from the one thing that can help them out of their misery. Such severe emotional issues should be addressed with professional consultation as early as possible, in order to prevent the person from falling deeper into depression.
